Cycling my tank....help

There was nothing on my rock for 8 days. I added some cheato and in two days this is what my rock looks like. Its a new tank and I know its going to do this but should there be this much build up in 2 days?

Hi,

Looks about normal, you did start with ro/di water right. :) Also looks like you have very little LR and alot of base rock. How's your cycle progressing.

Cheers,

Just keep an eye on your water quality and keep up with the water changes. If it doesn't fix it in a few weeks, readdress it.

Youll see the brown diatoms for awhile... maybe a month or so and the cyno will come and go as well. Some people recommend water changes during a cycle, I prefer just to let things run their course. It takes more patience but I think it helps the foundation of the system build stronger in the end. If you can handle the time and unsightly things that will grow that is :)

I agree with Dave. This looks very normal to me and should not cause alarm. Keep testing your water for ammonia; nitrites and nitrates as the first 2 move to zero and Nitrates go up you can start adding a clean up creaw and they will make short work cleaning the tank.

My cycle was done a month and a half ago and mine looked worse then that. Make sure you don't have your lights on for more than 8 hours a day.

Once my nitrates and ammonia fell to zero I waited a week, tested again. When the numbers were good I added a reef cleanup crew and they had removed most of it within a week.

After the week was over I got a lawnmower blennie and a sand siffting gobbie.

I have two wrasses in there now and I'm about to start adding corals and a few more fish.
