Cyanobacteria problem

Cyanobacteria. Aquatic bacteria that make their own food through the process of photosynthesis. Can rapidly overtake an aquarium said:
I grabbed this from the acronyms thread. How do you remove cyanobacteria from a tank? I've just replaced some old lights and am adding more flow to the tank this weekend. Is there something that can be added to remove this bacteria?

Many thanks!

you can syphon it out but...it will come back if you don't find the cause. I had the same problem when I set it my first tank. My problem was flow and over feeding. I added a few pumps and cut my feedings to half what I served and feed every other day.

Albert is right. Another thing that helps is cutting your light cycle time back a few hours for a while. There is a product called Chemi Clean that works pretty good, just make sure you follow the directions to the letter.

Well, I think the cause was the old lights (now replaced) and lack of flow (to be fixed this weekend). I haven't been overfeeding, more like underfeeding so it most likely was lights and flow.

So, with these to be fixed, can I assume it will go away????

It won't go away over night...I battled it for 2 wks before I saw any improvement. Mine was pretty bad. Yours may just be starting so it may not take that long to go away. Just be patient and you see it change for the good.

I am in the proces of fighting it now. I have a new tank so I expect it will take a while. The only place I am having problems now is on the back glass.
Hang in there you will get it under control.

So i think i am having this problem too. I will be fixing the over feeding, that should help and im trying to find some cheap powerheads to add into the tank, but i worry about too much flow... the clowns already seem to really work at it to stay anywhere

I had this 3 weeks ago, it covered my entire sand bed, was horrible looking.

I did water changes and water changes and water changes + increased the flow thinking of dead spots, reduced feeding ... NOTHING DOING.

Now I finally added a product called RED SLIME, which removed the entire bacteria fully, I now have white sand once more.

You can purchase Red Slime on ebay for $13 with shipping, your local LFS has it for $19. None of my fish died and the reviews for it online were 5 Stars, I would second that.

Hope this helps.

Keep in mind that cyno shows up for a reason. Yes you can chemically remove anything undesirable that may pop up in your tank, but if you don't find the source, then at some point you will be fighting the same issue again and again. I would read, read, read and try all the different methods to try to eliminate this issue and would only try chemicals as a very last resort. Make sure to keep up with your water changes and if using flake food keep in mind that this stuff dissolves inthe water column and basically becomes this invisible soup, which could fuel cyno as well. If chemicals are used everytime you have a problem, at some point you could end up with a tank full of toxic water and no livestock, extreme yes but very possible. I started having cyno issues also and thought my flow was fine until I started experimenting with powerhead placement and finally got adequate flow across my sandbed without actually disturbing it, two weeks later the problem was solved. Just my .02
