cyano fix help

I recently had some of my rock pop up with red cyano in my display as well ss my sump. What is a good way to get rid of this without adding chemicals? And how fast should I act upon this? I dont want it to takeover my tank.

reducing phosphates by running GFO in a reactor may help if you've over .03ppm phosphates in your system. dosing limewater in your topoff may help too, along with good ol' elbow grease via manual removal.

You can try lights out for 3 days. It's really hard to do but you have to leave them off for 3 whole days. You also need to test for nitrates and phosphates and then take action to get those down if they are higher than normal. Although, the most efficient way of getting rid cyano is chemiclean. We have found a combination of the 2 methods works great. The faster you get on it, the better too. Wait too long and it is harder to get rid of.

Without knowing specific's on your setup, parameter's, etc., it is almost impossible to diagnose your issue. It could be as simple as adding more flow or reducing the amount you are feeding the tank. I would make sure the basic's are covered before going overboard with chemical's etc.

Here are my parameters as of tonite. Ph-7.95 , Ammonia- 0, Nitrite-0, Nitrate- 0, Ca-400, Kh- 9dKh, Mg-1280. I dont have a phosphates test kit, but will pick one up tomorrow. Is it possibly my pH being slightly low? Or Im thinking maybe needing more flow. My setup is 120 with one big powerhead. Cyano is only on some of rock not all of it which makes me think it could be the flow.

When you go get a phosphate test kit I highly recommend the Hanna checker. Many of the other test kits are either not granular enough in their measurements, very difficult to discern between colors on measurements, or not very accurate. One powerhead is probably not quite enough for a 120.

Is that your max daily ph reading or a one time reading. Test kit or ph monitor? I would not suspect low ph with the alk reading you have. Low ph areas can definately help fuel cyano, some of the most common reasons are old lights with shifted spectrum, excessive nutrients or insufficient flow.

Cheers,

My ph has been that for a couple days now. I ordered a buffer which should be here today or tomorrow hopefully . Im getting the pH off my Apex Lite monitor. Probe is in the sump.

Never chase ph, you can really create more problems trying that. It would be better to up your alk to 10dkh however I would up the Mg by 100ppm prior to the Alk increase

Cheers

Phosphates tested ok . Problem has to be flow. Saving up for mp40 now. Im throwing in some turbo snails in to hopefully help situation.

Phosphates test ok cause cyano is consuming them

I had cyano really bad. I was debating of starting over it was so bad. I got rid of it 100% by: First I run 2 little fishies full of Pharmaceutical Grade Carbon. I get it off ebay, 30 bucks for 5 lbs.
I then got Chemiclean LIQUID PROFESSIONAL FORMULA. (must be liquid formula, ebay) I add 2 drops a day for 200 gallons of actual water. Treatment calls for 1 drop per gallon. So I am putting 1% of a full treatment. WARNING........this will boost you protein skimmer to epic proportions. I usally add it after feeding and skimmer kicks right in gear. You MUST go slowly on amount to add. start with one drop in 100 gallon tank. If you overdose (like 3 drops your skimmer will overflow). Again a full treatment is 200 drops for 200 gallons. so I am putting so little of it in. When I say overdose it is dealing strictly with skimmer overflowing. the solid crap coming out of skimmer is amazing. I must empty my skimmer (aqua-c ev 240) every other day. and it is full of solid crap. almost a paste. and that is wet skimming.
Some will say find the source. I know my source. I am control by their eyes.......FEED ME..... I love feeding my fish. I don't worry about anymore. 0 cyano. It works. once you get the daily dose down. if you have less than 100 gallons of actual water. You may have to experiment with it till you get daily dose down.

NOTE: I actually have drain tube in skimmer cup inside of sump. Just in case it overflows it is not putting all over the floor. That is rare once you get daily dose down.

Chemiclean treatments require you to turn off your skimmer followed by a water change. You still will be treating the symptoms and not the problem.

Cheers,

I agree with Ron. Root causes- overfeeding, low flow, and old bulbs are what I'd check first.

And sometimes? It's just something that you have to go through in setting up a new tank. How long has the tank been up?
