cyano breakout

well, ever since i moved out here into arlington, my tank hasn't been the same. oh well, to get to the point, my tank has cyano almost everywhere in a matter of 5 days span, it's gone from a couple of spots siphoned into pacthes everwhere. i've already changed my phos-ban, reduced feedings (fed roughly 1/2 cube daily), stopped any dosing (2 part), and have started leaving the lights off (used to be on 8 hours a day). it's been like that for about 2 days now and i was wondering if i should wait it out a bit more and siphon more of the mess out or, should i take much more drastic action by using a chemical like phos-buster or something? i am just concerned about some of my small sps pieces being smothered to death by the cyano, because my monti cap has started to bleach on places where the cyano are, along with spots on my digi. thanks in advance for your responses.

water quality comes to mind for me that was my problem when I first started out. I bought my water from wal-mart and fought cyano for atleast 3 months.

Then starting buying it from an Lfs and it cleared up in days . I finally broke down and bought a ro unit and it never came back.

I was also over feeding and not enough clean up crew to maintain my sand. I also added 2 mj1200 to better circulate the water and never looked back.

it wil clear up but takes time espically since you said you just moved it maybe trying to do a small cycle again.

i have my own di unit, but i am guessing the membrane is starting to get exhausted. i get my saltwater from aquatic trading in garland, but i am going to eventully switch to tranquil scape as soon i run out of my current sw supply. well, thanks albert.

You may want to try adjusting and/or increasing the flow also to see if that helps. You mentioned stopping the 2 part dosing which would not normally cause this issue, are you feeding cyclopeeze or phyto to your tank by chance. You should continue to blow the cyano off your corals, it will smother them.

Cheers!

This should do the trick http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=BE1115

Make sure you siphon out as much as you can then do a water change 2 days later.

Make sure you have lots of flow in your tank. Cyano will no grow where you have good flow.

I had a bad cyano outbreak and researched and asked questions and was told all kinds of chemicals to use and called petorama trying to make a late nite buy of chemi-clean and talked to scott he advised me to siphon out what cyano I could and raise alk a bit and turn out lights for at least 24 hours my OH my you would not believe the difference in my tank the next nite at 6pm NO and I mean like almost NO cyano left. I turn my lights back out for 24 more hours and I am all cleared up. Scott at the petorama said he could sell me the chemi-clean but why use that and take a chance when you can try the safe measure and it worked great

thanks, i have a little mini-jet that has always been on max. the head isn't adjustable anymore because of the glue that covers it, haha. i've left the lights off for a couple of days now and i've gotten rid of most of the cyano that was around on my rocks and corals. there's still little spots here and there, anybody have any other suggestions?
