Curing Liverock: a must?

I know, the obvious answer is yes. But, I stumbled across this article and it made sense. What do you think about it?

It's just another way of curing live rock. It takes a bit longer, but in the end you will end up with the same rocks.

My personal preference is to start the curing process is a trash can or bucket and scrub every few days and change the water out after scrubbing.

Everyone does it slightly different... just remember that everything good takes time.

yup =) i consider him (Albert J. Thiel) one of the "fathers" of modern reef aquaria in the US and even the world. I didn't read the article fully (it's probably a decade old if it's from him) but "uncured" rock will likely bring with it more life into your tank than cured. You will have to cure it yourself so that's something you'll have to read up on. Many people suggest "cooking" rock in a trash can to cure it. If you don't know what you're donig, then I say probably go toward this... otherwise do something else (like me - I put heavy heavy filtration on but cure with the lights on 4hrs a day... have to know what you're watching for or else you could have a heavy algae bloom from all the decaying matter releasing nutrients into the tank) (edit: I skimmed it again, he's describing basically what I do =)

usually when you purchase "cured" rock locally, the lfs doesn't have good filtration or lighting on the tank - and you may get unwanted hitchhikers from other things in their system (aiptasia, algae etc.). If you cure it yourself you're in control but you need to stick with a process and not get anxious to put things into the tank immediately. If you buy "cured" rock online, the rock will still have some die off thorugh shipping so you will have to cure it briefly again.

hope that helped! wasn't sure if i answered your question! if you have any more, feel free to send them my way. good luck =)

I much much much prefer to get uncured live rock preferably shipped to my airport straight! You will get a lot more biodiversity that way. Whether you cure in your seperate tanks or in the actual tank you'll use you can control the environment and prevent a bunch of die off by doing water cahnges and skimming like crazy.

I actually swap with a LFS Once every six months 20#s from my sump for 20# straight off the plane just to keep the biodiversity up.
