Cup Coral Strings

We are new to this and noticed today some white strings coming from our Cup Coral and Lobo Brain Coral. Today we did a water change, made sure the salinity level is within parameters.

Also we did a Red Slime treatment which caused problems with the skimmer and micro bubbles but we thing we have that under control now. I did a google search and believe this is normal when they get distressed but when our LFS comes and does water changes the corals don't do this.

It is fine but did you match water temp and make sure salt was mixed all the way? How long did you mix salt before putting it in?

Hi Burbarry - we used room temp water so the temp should have been very close. The salt was 1/2cup per 5 gallons of RO water; mixed with water rotation from a power hose from the RO tank and from a 1/3HP pump that I use to bring the water from the basement to the tank via 30ft of hose.

1/2 cup per 5g is not right I think. It should be 1/2 per 1g... You might double check.

+1. Don't know of any salt mix that is 1/2 to 5.

My typo. 1/2 cup to 1 gallon. We use Instant Ocean. We mix it in a 5 gallon bucket which is where my mental break down happened!

Yep. We use RO water through a 5 stage system. We let it mix in the bucket for about 3 minutes before pumping it to the tank. To mix it I use a kitchen stirring spoon, a submersible pump that swirls the water in the bucket, and a submersible pump that pumps it to the tank. The tank is doing great now but I still have some micro bubbles that I need to address through the sump.

I would mix a lot longer than 3 minutes. I'd have to go look at my bucket but I think a minimum of 2 hours is recommended.

also switch to reef crystals or something like that also mix your salt at 1.025

+1. I mix 25 gallons at a time and mix it for 36-48 hours with a heater running in it the whole time. I for 5 gallons I probably wouldn't use the heater because the pump will probably heat up the water as it circulates. But I would let it mix for at least 24hrs.
