Crushed Coral?

Question: I've had bag of crushed coral in my system for about 4 years now (laying in the bottom of the sump). I purchased a new skimmer and need to move some things around to make it all fit. Will I see a negative effect if I remove some or all of the coral?

I do NOT have a sand bed - it is a bare bottom currently.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Jeff

That would depend on the size of the crushed coral. If large pieces it acts more as a nitrate sink as detritus can settle below it. If small grain, then it may have areas where nitrates are being consumed (performing as deep sandbed).

I would slowly remove it like 1" a week only the top layer each time. Also if you smell rotten eggs remove it all immediately and then do a large water change.

Sent from pay phone in the airport.
