crocea clam

It would seem to not be good. Clams are photosynthetic feeders (zooxanthilae take light and convert it into sugars for the clam) as well as filter feeders. What kind of lighting do you have, and how far from the bulbs are the clams depth? Are you feeding phyto? Pulled in mantles can indicate irritation from tank mates, like any angels or heniochus (moorish idols) nipping at them.
Let us know what is in your tank, for a better answer.

Can you also add a pic so we can see exactly what you mean by "not sticking out as much". :D

Cheers,

The mantel is prob. piching. This happens when you have another animal picking at the mantle, low light, too much flow on the clam, orif calcium levels are low. If you can get a good look at the clam just under the mantle look for small snails called pyramid snails which can also cause the mantle to pinch.

Please list all water perameters. What kind of lighting, age of tank, size and description of system. How long have you had the clam? Please include a picture of the clam. We need this information to help you. Please try to do it soon as clams can go down hill fast.
Thanks,
Mary
