crabs

do I REALLY need hermit crabs? All they seem to do is tear up my feather dusters. I feed them all individually everyday along with my peppermints and they don't seem to be interested in eating the dusters but they like to tear up the tubing and expose the worm. I have witnessed three different crabs doing this but not eating the wom, but rather letting it fall into the sand and it then creates a new tube in the sand bed.

BTW I really can tell all of my crabs and peppermints apart. My friends gave them all names too. :D

Great. then I will be taking those suckers back to the LFS tomorrow so I can move my colored dusters back to the main tank.

LOL we have ours named also. Seriously what type of hermes do you have?? We haven't yet had any trouble with our blue legs and i would think that if any of ours would get into trouble it would be the one we call ambitious. (he wandered around with a shell about 5 times too big until he finally grew into it). But haveing said that our feather duster is a farely recent addition (1 month) so they may not have found it yet

Our zebra hermits tore stuff up so we threw all of them in to the sump. No problems thus far with blueleg and scarlet. They do keep the sand and rocks very clean. Unfortunately, they have it out for any frags in the tank and insist on knocking every one over (lost a pink birdsnest that way - none of the others turned pink like him ) Actually, our queen conch is doing a little bit of a better job keeping the sand clean.

We don't feed our shrimp. Except for the cleaner shrimp (he got spoiled and won't clean anymore) and our Pistol shrimp (who comes out of his hole to eat from our hands). The peppermints took care of any aptasia that popped up in the tank and scavange around at night.

Well they were just some blue and red legs. Though Conrad was brown and really big.

I also feed my shrimp because if I don't feed them first they go after the food I feed to my corals, so I just hand them each a small peice and let them run off and then I feed my corals.
