Crabs or No Crabs

To add crabs or to not add crabs?
Just emerald crabs should have been an option... Please let me know if you would go w/ just emerald crabs.

Thanks for that. A friend of mine has a hermit and she complains of the snail eating/shell stealing but I always found that 'cute' from a distance. We have a tank of land crabs, maybe that will have to be enough hermies for us for a while until I find the Scarlet hermits that were mentioned. I'm glad I saw this thread. Thanks again!
 
I too have the Snail Killers in my tank, and am getting pretty tired of it. I would much rather have the snails than the little blue devils. I didnt have a problem with this until about 2 months ago. If I had it to do again, I would only have scarlet hermits and snails.
 
I had an emerald mythrax until he recently passed away and a good assortment of both scarlet and blue-legged hermits. Sure, I lose a nassarius or cerith snail from time to time, but the benefits of the crabs cleanup ability greatly outweighs the minimal loss in my opinion. Plus, I happen to like the little buggers..I find them rather amusing!

Another thing to consider is that if you were keeping land hermits, you should provide some extra shells for it to move into. I feel it's no different with the aquatic guys. I know that many of the LFS's I've seen have tons of dead snail shells in some tanks (usually due to inappropriate acclimation) and would probably be happy to make some spare change off them.
 
At one time I was not going to put anymore hermits in the tank, now I keep some scarlet hermits. When I did not have any hermits I had a huge breakout of tube snails that cast this stupid web all throughout the tank, they were eeverywhere. After talking to Ron Shimek about them and him saying that to keep them under control was one good reason to have hermits I agree with him.
