Crab, allow it my tank?

[I had bought some cerith snails, but one of them is
actually a crab of some kind, should I allow him
into my crabless tank?

Right now, he is in my whisper filter compartment.

Thanks]

[It sounds like it is a little hermit crab?? If so, it probably would not be a problem. But if it is some other type than a small hermit, I would certainly find out what it is before putting it the main tank.]

[well, it's in a cerith shell, and all I can see is his 2 little claws,
I can't tell what color they are.]

[If it carries the shell around, it is just a little reef hermit. They are pretty harmless, as long as he has a little bigger shell laying around to move into when he outgrows the one he has now.]

[Well, there are some trochus and astrea shells lying around
that are bigger, but I just don't want him terminating
my other ceriths and nassarius! :taz:]

[From what I've read it seems the blue leg are the most aggressive of the little hermits and even they won't usually bother your snails as long as there are available empty shells to move into. If none are available they will try to empty one to occupy.]
