CPR Knockoff Skimmers - Work or Don't Work?

Anybody ever use a CPR knockoff protein skimmer? I have a 40 gallon breeder that I am setting up. It will be a fish only with live rock. It is my first marine setup.

This Odyssea Pro Pack Protein Skimmer Single looks almost identical to a CPR Bak Pak 2. It is a lot cheaper though and I have a suspect there is a reason.

If anyone that has used one of these knockoffs and could share their horror stories or success stories, I would appreciate it. :)

Thanks,

Justin

I don't know about the knockoffs, I think octopus makes a similar one to and I would be apt to trust it more than Odyssea. Many people claim that Odyssea skimmers are garbage out of the package but work okay with some modding.

You are better off going with the used CPR or just to buy a new one. After trying different skimmers, the CPR (for the price) works the best.

Hi,

A good skimmer is very important.....folks that get crappy skimmers all think their's skim wonderfully...until they finally get a decent skimmer on their tank. I would recommend either a Remora or the BakPak for HOB skimmers. If you have the room you may want to look into adding a sump/refugium setup to your tank, the extra water volume will help out with overall stability while giving you a place to stash the skimmer/heater etc. Here's a good article to go over since this is your first setup, you probably read this already but it might have some info that your other reading didn't cover. http://tinyurl.com/2swnjg HTH

Cheers!

Ron makes a good point, of course skimming is very important, and there is no doubt that the Remora C is the best of all the HOB skimmers. However, we all have a budget to work with, so if you go the Bak-Pak route to save some green, here are some tips:

I have both. The Remora C and three CPR Bak-Baks. The Remora looks nice, and it's quiet, efficient and trouble free. It was also expensive. The bak-packs can work almost as well if you take the time to tweak them a bit. In fact, get used to tweaking them often if you want them to come near the performance of the Remora. But the adjustments are easy once you get the hang of it, and infrequent if you keep your pump clean.

First off, the skimmer part of these things are basically all the same, identical for the most part, so go with the cheaper one. Or, if you are fortunate enough to run across one of the double sided ones new or especially used, grab it. There was one went on our sell/buy forum a while back that I just missed. But buy the bak-pak without the pump unless it comes with a MJ. Because it’s the pump that makes the difference in these skimmers. Don’t use a Rio or any of the inferior power heads. A good MJ1200 that is clean and in good working order runs them perfectly. You can modify (Drill) the MJ to improve the performance, but just keeping them clean really helps; a vinegar bath every couple of months will keep these babies foaming.

Secondly: toss the bio-bale and stuff the return compartment with Cheato algae. Clip a cheap clamp-on spotlight (s) to shine onto the back of the return chamber and you have a combination HOB skimmer and Fuge. If your feeling really energetic, you can worm a length of airline tubing through the return chamber down and up through the second chamber and back down into the bubble chamber and put a wooden air stone just bellow the collection cup. This will increase your bubble output almost double, but if you do this make sure to leave a loop of airline tubbing long enough that you can pull up with your fingers to change out the air stone as they become clogged. Don't worry about micro-bubbles. Having the return packed with macros will eliminate micro bubbles escaping back into the tank, (Don't buy the worthless bubble trap) The Chaeto algae serves as a nice haven for pods, as well as a good source of nitrate export, and it grows like crazy in these things. Just squirt a little DT's in in once a week to feed the micro-fauna. Mine is working alive with mini Brittle Stars, Mysid shrimp, copepods and a few aptasia. I highly recommend these simple DIY mods to these knock-offs. I have three spotlights on all three of mine, and my trates are always <5, and and in one system I keep enough pods cultivated to feed a green mandarin without a sump/refuge in a fifty gallon tank that is less than a year old.

Last of all, put a three inch long section of pipe insulation cut down the middle over the lip of the tank under the intake pipe. This will eliminate the vibration that makes these suckers so noisy. The only complaints you ever hear about these skimmers are, Noise, Micro-bubbles, and constant adjustment. What I have written above will eliminate all of these problems.

There you have it. More than you really wanted to know about Bak-Pak HOB Knock-off skimmers.

Good call...I went to rift to reef and picked up a bag of cheato (great store by the way) and stuffed it down the return chamber. Topped it off with a light from A to T and instant fuge. Thanks for the advice.

If you squirt a little phyto into the third chamber with a turkey baster once or twice a week you will have tons of pods breeding in the algae. As the Cheato grows, expands, you can poke it on down around the bottom baffle and it will eventually grow up into the center chamber and finally just make an "S" turn right into the third, or Bubble Chamber. You can literally fill these things up with macro and it won't effect the flow as long as you don't pack it too tight. If you notice flow starting to back up or water level getting too high in the bubble chamber just pull some of the algae through the outlet with salad tongs, pods will hitchhike on the algae into your display. I've never had a problem with water level overflowing and the pod production is keeping my mandarin fat.

Disclaimer:

CPR does not endorse these modifications.

They would prefer you buy their, rather pricey, CPR-HOB Fuge, instead. Which is basically the same thing we've built here, only theirs don't skim.

I don' think there is much different in performance between Odyssea Pro Pack and CPR Bak Pak 2. The best pump for them is diy pin wheel mj 1200, Iam running one on 35g and have to raise (mod) the cup completely above the skimmer, if not it will fill the cup in few minutes. Remora is good but no way it can outperform CPR with modified mj 1200.

Man, that sucker is really foaming. Ken, what mods did you do to the MJ to get that kind of power. Is this a mod with the Dumas prop? Or is this like Marc's Pinwheel mod? I didn't think any of these mods could be used on the CPR. All I did was drill holes in the intake, like in Marc's thread. But mine doesn't foam like that.

Also, you may be right about the modified CPR out skimming the Aqua C Remora. The Remora is quiet and looks nice, but I honestly think I'm getting better performance now from my Bak-Pac. Please elaborate on your modifications to that MJ. Or is that even an MJ. I've never seen a white one.

Michelle - The pins (Needlewheel) instead of an impeller rips the air bubbles into tinier and tinier bubbles = more bubbles = more surface area = better skimming...

Correct!!

Okay, my next question will be does anyone have an old bio ball sitting around? And you still use the venturi adapter? it just feeds into this instead?

Ask lfs, I am sure they will give you some bio balls. I don't have adaptor, I stick the air tubing inside the inlet.
Here is picture of the side of the skimmer

Any chance there is a thread somewhere showing this diy pinwheel impeller for a maxijet? I have a cpr knock off in the mail (eta tomorrow) and I would like to try this mod. That is if it can be done w/o destroying the impeller to the point I couldn't return it to it's original condition.

Yeah a link to the mod would be helpful. I am still having trouble visualizing how to get the air into this contraption. I would think with the propeller gone, that the pump would no longer pump water and thus not be able to suck the air in. Most likely thought I am just not thinking about it correctly.
