Coralline on back glass.... yes or no?

I personally like the back of my tank to be clean and black. I feel it makes the fish and corals look better. It also makes the tank look cleaner.

I'm opposite, I prefer the back covered with coral or anything other than black. Black anything just doesn't look natural, and I prefer a natural reef look. How many times do you dive and see a clean black background?

There really isnt an enclosed box when diving so what would you consider the background? It could be the rocks or the ocean or even some sand depending on your perspective. Either way you never see a flat wall with purple coralline algae on it when your diving. There really is no way to make a fish tank look truly natural unless its about 50 feet long and the visibility is 49 feet.

I JUST made the decision a couple of days ago to clean the back glass. I like the look of coraline on the back but mine was mixed with algae that I couldn't scrub off (and my snails are falling down on the job). I have to admit that I kind of like the look of it cleaned off. The back of my tank is blue so it looked like crap.

Here's the before and after. It looks a lot better IMO with the back cleaned off.

Thank you! I put water in it for the first time Aug. 29 so it's 5 months old.

It sure seems like a lot longer than that, but I checked the log to make sure. :)

The coraline in my tank is growing so out of control it has now started to show up on the underside of my glass center brace! I let it spread all over the back glass, since I could not keep up with it and there were some hard to reach places. So now it gives the tank an overall purplish hue.

ehh, not a real fan of it on the back glass - makes it all look to girly - Barbie dream cabana beach house.

I like the clean look, but I'm finding it to be kind of a pain to keep scraping it. Is there a trick I'm missing?

before growth and after. I need to clean it. :D Not to mention my battle with turf or maybe bryopsis i cant decide which but after some gfo and new di/prefilters it is on the retreat. The urchin is also making a dent on the coraline in the back. Hard to scrape a 265 when the top is 7 ft above the ground.

In my 75 the back is covered entirely in coraline. You can't see most of it because it is behind the rock. What you can see is patially covered by a half a salad plate's worth of my purple cap as well as two different patches of Elkhorn monti. The overflow is covered with coraline as well and has zoas out the wazoo growing on it. I think the corals grow onto the coraline better than they do clean glass and I like the corals growing there.

I use a Magfloat with an EZ-Blade superglued to it. Coralline just melts with an EZ-Blade. The only tough part to scrape is the side of the back towards my overflow. My overflow is in the left corner of my tank, and it blocks the view of the back of my tank adjacent to it. For this, I borrow my wife's vanity mirror and work off the reflection.
