Coral propagation

While I have kept fish for many years, corals are a whole new ball game.I'm curious about what I am seeing.? I have my first frags in the tank. One is a Xenia.? I almost killed it, or did kill it, by following a dipping procedure that was probably bogus.? They said to rinse in fresh water after dipping in Bayer.? The Xenia, though closed up, immediately started inflating like a balloon.? After placing it in the tank it started to die back.? I kept seeing small dark growths extending out of the shrunken polyps, so I still had hope for it.Yesterday I saw something really strange.? The rock the Xenia is on is covered by over a hundred tiny (1mm in length) dots.? They look like short pieces of string and they fluoresce in blue light.? They can't be seen from end on, but from the side they light up.Am I about to have a Xenia explosion, or is this something completely different?ThanksMark

Not sure how you mixed the Bayer dip... But too strong of a dip will kill off corals... Sounds like the die off may be causing a bacteria bloom.

I put 10 mils in a cup of Salt water.? This didn't harm the GSP or Red People Eater. The Xenia was tiny.? About the size of a quarter.? This was about 2 weeks ago.?I got the mix from watching Bulk Reef Supply.Too strong?

I don't have a RO system yet, unfortunately.? Just now working on the wife to take over part of her laundry room.?

There is too many unknowns about tap water as it varies all over the metroplex so not sure about your area. the safe practice is to never use treated tap for anything unless you have tested your tap water to know what is consists of. I feel the dip was a little strong and how long did you leave it in the dip?

10 minutes.? I'm not convinced that a fresh water rinse is necessary.? As I said I saw an immediate reaction.?? This guy said that salt water wouldn't remove the Bayer.? I don't know.I just upgraded my lights to two Reef Bright 72" Lumi Lites.? One 50/50 and one blue.? I'm hoping that will make the two I have left happier.I got a Xenia because I kept seeing people saying it was a weed and almost impossible to kill.? Well, it looks like I managed it.? :)

For soft corals I use 10 mill in a 1/2 gallon ?3 min max on small coralsRodi water is used as a dip not a rinseyou can shake the coral in the bayer dip to remove any pests and skip the water rinse?sps corals I use a different process?

Today the hundreds of little stems I was seeing on the rocks have disappeared.? :)The good news is a single polyp has risen out of the mass that was my Xenia.? I guess the new lights helped.Mark

I think what I was seeing were Dinoflagellates.? Why they only hung around for 3 days, I have no clue.? Maybe the crabs ate them.Mark

I bought another Xenia frag.? It lasted 24 hours.? Something ate it overnight. The logical culprit, the decorator crab, has been banished to the refugium.? 3rd frag bought and in the tank.? We'll see tonight.

The Xenia is recovering.? It's had a rough life.? The thing came unglued and was rolling around in the current.? I scooped it up and re-glued it.? It is recovering nicely.?The Red People Eater isn't growing, but it is coming out now. ? The toadstool seems to be fine.? Both are coming out now that I dimmed the white LEDs.The Green Star Polyp is just barely alive and I think the other Zoantha is history.?
