Proper water flow is important too.

And I am not talking about crazy values should as 40x or 60x per hour. More like the 10-15-20x is good. I'd stick closer to 20x for an SPS tank. And just as important as quantity of flow is QUALITY of flow. By that I mean non-laminar, non-firehouse pointy flow. Rather, you are looking for good diffuse flow, such as can be created with a SEIO or Tunze powerhead (for example).

Also, many LPS corals (definately including candycane) can be fed regularly, improving growth. Ideal food choices include frozen foods such as mysis, plankton, etc. Avoid brine shrimp, unless encriched or gut loaded, as they are not much more then "shrimp shaped sacs of water". (Calfo)

I think you likely have all the answer you REALLY need. But just for kicks and grins, here is a link to a post where I answered a question in great detail about feeding LPS corals.

Like I said, mostly along the line of what you have heard already. Might be worth a look, though...

Yeppers - give it a try - it will be relatively apparent that the coral is getting the food. The feeding tentacles that it extends at night will stick to the mysis (etc).

For mine, they start to open when the MH's go off, and they're completely open by the time the moonlights come on.. so.. about an hour of lowered light.
