copperbanded butterfly

hi everyone, i just picked up a beautiful copperbanded butterfly today. i took him home and acclimated him for about an hour. right now he is swimming around just fine and not hiding. i tried feeding him but he didn't seem to accept the food. i put in some mysis, but he just ignored it, while the two clowns went for it like they haven't been fed in days. what should i do for him to start eating? he is a beautiful fish and i want to give him the proper care. thanks in advance.

hey, vinh, i have the same fish that i bought last 2 weeks ago. you are right, this fish doesnt want to eat anything, even the food fly by in front of his face, he still doesnt bother to eat. He is picking up something from the rocks. Well, i am tired of him, so i let the nature taking care of him. I dont know, may be some fellow experienced reefers here can give us some advice.

That's the trick. Did it eat at the LFS before you bought it? You might need to mix live brine shrimp from the LFS (adult live swimming brine) and mix it with some frozen foods to get him to hopefully eat a little bit of both. Hopefully after a couple of weeks of this, he'll start focusing on all the foods you have and not rely solely on live food any longer.

He may decide to eat aiptasia and featherdusters in your tank. It took mine at least 3 weeks to start eating aiptasia, after I finally saw him out and about. For the first 5 days, I never saw him and thought he was dead!

Marc, i bought it from our members here. I forgot to ask him if the fish have been eatting in his tank. Live shrimp? where do i get those??? if i put live shrimp in a tank, the other of my fish will eat them all. I have one clown, yellow, purple, blonde, firehawk, chevron tangs. These guys eat like a pig, i dont think live shrimp will last for few minutes. in a tank. :(

live brine shrimp ehhh??? i haven't had much luck hatching these....much less grow them to an adequate size. any pointers on how to achieve this? luckily for me, the fish is swimming about and seems very happy and not stressed. hopefully, he'll eat sometime soon....

He's most likely getting used to his environment and sticking to what it can eat off the rocks. You probably have lots of his favorites if you didn't have a wrasse of any kind. Give him some time.

Just FYI on the live adult brine shrimp, Boutique Pet Shop (One of our sponsors) almost always has live brine shrimp on hand... I'm sure other LFS do too, but ya'll are both on the same side of town as me (And Boutique) and I know they carry 'em...

You have to buy adult live brine shrimp at your LFS. I've never tried to grow them past 48 to 72 hours myself. I feed baby brine to my tank.

ok, i will go to Bouquiet fish store this Monday. Hope he opens on July 4. instead of grilling his BBQ. LOL>

Try frozen PE Mysis shrimp. In my experiance, if it does not eat the mysis they will starve. Brine shrimp has little nutritional value.

Always ask to see a copperband eat mysis before you buy it.

just went out to boutique and got some brine. he ate it up but didn't seem to bother w/ the mysis i mixed in there. he seems to have developed some ick on his nose. how should i treat this? i can't solk garlic in his food because he won't accept pellets.

I waited for a very long time before I bought my CBB. I would see them at LPS but they would not eat. I finally found one at DNA but made sure it was eating before i bought it. I think if they are not eating feed the brine shrimps for a while and then start mixing mysid but cut it up into smaller pieces. Overtime you will be able to feed whole mysids.

I feed mine mysids. It also went for all my featherdusters! I have none right now in my tank...but if you look in the sump it is filled!

Good luck with your Copperband!

These guys are really picky eaters.. i'm on my 2nd one now. My first one i lost to bad water quality. I have my new one in quarantine now.. he likes mysis, but still picks at it.. I think he's still feeling stressed from all the bouncing around. He also had some ich spots so i'm treating him with formulin.

I agree make sure they are eating at the fish store first... my first one was a little pig. This one is more picky, but at least still eating. You mentioned that you found spots on his face.. you might want to quarantine him for awhile and treat him, and during that time maybe he will de-stress and start eating again.
