Copper testing question

I have been using copper for ich treatment for 2 days. Today I went and got a test kit but I got the wrong one and didnt notice it until after I opened it. I'm using coppersafe (chelated copper sulfate) and the test kit is instant ocean brand (for use on free or non-chelated copper such as copper sulfate or copper citrate).

How off will the test be?

fish behaviour has been fine... i dropped a snail on there to monitor, since they are more likely to die first... problem is this is an aggressive tank and in about 2 minutes, the puffer or trigger get him...

 I thought most puffers were not tolerant of copper treatments and the ones that are, required a different dosage(lower) than other fish. I hope all turns out well but you may want to research that a bit further.

Cheers,

i did read that somewhere, but I going to treat on the low end with the copper.. thats why I'm worried that this test kit is not accurate...

I just tested the kit buy putting alot of copper in a small cup then tested it. and the test kit turned dark dark brown meaning that the copper was out of control levels. At least I know that the kit reads/detects chelated copper somewhat.

I'll call around for a test kit and maybe see if my LFS can at least test ity once to see where I'm at. chelated copper is suppose to be 1% the toxic levels of the non-chelated stuff...

You should have a test kit before starting any copper treatment. The way you tested is not reliable, you have no reference. If you treat on the low end it still may be too much for the puffer and would probably be ineffective for the other fish. There is info on dosage's for dogface puffers somewhere online.

Cheers,
