Considering buying a pallet of salt

Does anyone know if any of the local stores that support our group have discounts on buying a pallet of salt?

I have tried the following salts within the last 12 months.
Seachem
Reef Crystals
Fritz
DNA
Oceanic

I was just going to do a search of the forums for Salinity for personal use.

Last year ... maybe a little longer one of the sponsors was offering a huge discount on it, if enough barrels were met. Maybe someone who took part in that will chime in ... otherwise, I'll direct you to it, when I find it.

I think fish2morow said they could do it too.

I'd take a barrel if someone leads a group buy.

I haven't been impressed with salinity. I get a lot of residue when mixing and when I checked I got a phosphate reading. I've always liked Red Sea Pro and had good luck with it. I also tried the Fritz they handed out at one of the frag swaps and it dissolved really quick and left no residue. Rift2Reef has had the best price on Salinity and Tropic Marin the last few years. Once my Salinity runs out I'm going to get a bucket of Tropic Marin from him. I haven't used it since probably the late 90's but I always liked it back then.

I've been using Reef Crystals for years, so if this GB ends up using Reef Crystals, count me in. I normally buy 4 200-G boxes at a time from Dr. Foster and Smith.

Thanks for the responses. I'll contact some of the local stores to see what they can offer us.

Does anyone know how much they weigh? I have an explorer......What would the best loading/unloading method?

I went through and tried to estimate the weight of it, and I get numbers floating between 300 to 350 lbs.

The last couple I've seen, the salt was delivered to the store and then you just picked up your bucket(s) there. If you go that route, you might want to suggest everyone prepay. I know of one where the store ordered a bunch and then several people backed out and never picked up the buckets they ordered. That store refused to do anymore deals like that.

I would also suggest that anyone buying also buy something from the store. Test kit, coral frag, fish, fish food. Stores in the past were disappointed when they offered a discount and then got pretty much nothing out of it. I know this first hand because they told me so. If 30 people show up at the store and only get the salt and leave, the negligible profit hardly makes it worth their time, not to mention the transaction fees incurred for processing your card. If you buy it at regular price, they wouldn't bat an eye if that is all you bought.

So if you save money on the salt, use the difference to get something else. The store will appreciate it. Something to think about. :)

I totally agree.

Yesterday, I went to a store during lunch, I wasn't planning on buying anything as I was only planning on checking the store I have never been to. After talking with the employees/owner on how the store was doing, I decided to buy a few snails to show my support.

Regarding the salt, I did place an inquiry about it and they only sell Kent at about $50 per 200G box. They mentioned that we can get a discount if we buy 1/2 pallet or more. I have never tried Kent and will need to do some reading.

In regards to Salt choice. Make sure you try and stick to a salt mix that are of the same Alk and Calcium levels you currently maintain in your tank. Example: If you run bio pellets and like to keep your Alk around 8.5 dkh, DO NOT use high alk salts like Instant Ocean Reef Crystal which has an Alk of 13 dkh to do water changes. The Alk spike could shock your corals and cause a lot of stress, even killing them. Same is true for the opposite, those with High alk, should not use salt mixes with lower alk levels. This isn't so much a problem for those who do very small incremental water changes, like 5% weekly etc. But those who do 20-25% biweekly like myself should be careful about salt selection. just FYI.

I work for Glass Aquatics in Hurst and I'll talk with the owner about this but I cannot make any promises. Just a heads up, this kind if purchase would require prepayment.

Does anyone know about how much discount off retail was given?

I like Marc suggestion about adding another product to purchase to help the shops. Would everyone be cool with adding food to the mix?
