Computer power supply

[What is the advantage of using a computer power supply rather then a 12v transformer when wiring up fans and moonlights?
I thought I saw somewhere that with the computer power supply you can wire them up to the same one as opposed to a transformer for each one.
Any help would be appreciated.]

[Well, you have to figure out how to get it to switch on first. Other than that, cost (Higher for a computrer PS), and efficency (lower for a computer PS).

Your better off going to radioshack/frys/proabably even lowes or HD to get a 12v PS. you could run your fans and moonlights off the same transformer. You wire them in parallel. That basically means you bring all the fan wires back, and connect them to the two wires comming out of the power supply.

The only thing you need to worry about (and probably won't come into play) is current. If the fans draw 250ma, and the Power supply is rated for 1200ma, then you could only run 4 fans. (the current draw from a computer fan would be more like 10-50ma)]

[I agree with Sam.

I looked into reusing an old PC power supply to power fans, but it's a real pain. You have to get the diagram that shows the voltage for each wire and how to connect up a switch. I decided that it was worth it to buy a 12v power supply from radio shack for <$15. Plus it's a lot smaller than the big ole PC power supply.]

[I have found that old external harddrive enclosures work very well. The benefit is if you have some stored in boxes or stuck in the corner of the closet they are free.]

[I am using a computer power supply to run some LED's and a fan. Mine has a on and off switch on it. As far as wiring the fan and LED's all you have to do is plug them in. The LED's I got at Fry's had the plug on the end so it plugged into the wires from the power supply just as well as the fan is wired the same way.

This is the LED light I got

Here is pic of the LED's and fan.
