Comments on Zebra Moray Eel

We have set up a 110 gallon tank at work with about 180lbs of live rock and 200lbs of sand. It's still in the cycling stage, so I'm just asking about future purchase.

The big man wants to get an eel and he found this one (Zebra Moray Eel). According to one site, it is docile/peaceful, and to use caution with a reef.

Has anyone had any experience with this eel? If so, please share. Thanks!

I had one and he behaved very well. He even allowed my cleaner shrimp to pick his teeth. I had to feed him with a stick and almost had to beg him to eat as he was very shy. I never same him during the day with exception of a head poke or a glimpse of the body. He did die some time ago of some type of cancer I believe. But he was a good eel.

I had a snowflake in mine...no problems with him, but I do highly suspect he nabbed a gramma. Anyway, here is a excellent read for ya.

Thanks Steve and Steve. I liked the article too.

Did either of you put pvc under the sand like the article shows? I think that would be fasinating way to provide a place for an eel.

Nope...I didnt. But I did place my rocks on or pushed down good on the sand as to prevent any type of slides. Mine would make his own cave system.
Amanda has a nice, larger snowflake in hers....she has a stand that allows you to look up from the bottom. You can see him all coiled up under the rocks. Kina cool.

I love the zebra moray. We have had ours for about 6.5 years. Zebras are not a threat to tank mates like other eels are. Ours won't even eat live shrimp but it will eat crawfish. It is not in a reef right now but we do plan on putting it in one some day. Ours was shy initally but now will swim all over the tank begging for food. They can sometimes be hard to get to eat but we never had that problem.

Here is a picture I posted on Reef Central.

Not to call you a liar, but zebra eels can pose a threat to tank mates. I've heard of zebras eating fish before, so don't put it past them.

Wow, I am quite surprised. Zebras are crustacean eaters not fish eaters like many other eels. If there is a chance it is very slim. After doing a search on Reef Central I didn't hear any one say that their zebra ate a tank mate. If you had kept one of these you would know that they are very docile, reclusive, and hard to get to really eat anything sometimes. Snowflakes on the other hand are much more likely to eat a tank mate if given the opportunity.

I have a snow flake in my tank and he shares his home with a Picaso trigger.. they get along fine at the moment. He is still a baby tho.. only about 10 or 11 inches long. He was shy at first, but has come out of his "shell" more and more. They are great fun to watch. Just make sure that the lid on the tank is tight... wouldn't want to see it get out.

Tanks:
55g FW. (soon to be turned into reef tank  )
100g Fish only with live rock
200g (Still in the process of getting it up and going)

I had a Snowflake Eel in my 55 gal along time ago. He shared a tank with a purple tang, and a dogface puffer. I added a yellow tang later and a few smaller fish. Bad idea anything that was small enough to fit in his mouth did. Lost 2 grammas, f.perc clown fish, and a damsel. Here's an old pic of mine.

There really cool to watch and it wasn't afraid to come out during the day. Swam around and made his own cave.
