color for my zoas

Put them in someone elses tank usually ;)

Seriously color on zoanthids and palys varies greatly from tank to tank. The most colorful usually come out of medium light and high K setups. Mine always look better under t-5, rather than halide. I believe the spectrum of the bulbs plays a big part in things and the bluer the more color you will get. If you get a nice balance between high peak blue and white, youll have some great coloration.

Thanks Dave. I thought my lights might be the problem because when I took my corals from my 12 gal pod with my compact lighting and put them in my 60 gal I noticed my colors weren't as great. I'm running a 250 watt reef flux 10k and 2 T5 attinics. And I'm wondering which way to go? I like the natural look in my tank and I like the whiter light, but this 10k reefflux I think is just too white. It makes everything in the tank look orange, purple or brown. I don't know if I should go with a 20k or what manuf. and change my T5 attinics to 10k or go 12k and leave my attinics. Its alot of money bouncing around lightbulbs and figuring out what you like. I do have lps and softies in the tank too, so I want to stay with the metal hal lights, so I guess my question is. . .who out there has metal hals on their zoos and likes the results? and what double ended bulb manuf. and K are you using? Keeping in mind that I like the more white lights, but the reefflux 10k is just too white.

I would suggest a 14K, either XM or SPS and for the T-5's go with ATI Blue Plus. The Blue Plus will really pop colors and they are completely different than the standard atinics, they are much more blue than purple. I have the 14K XM on my 45G and love the color, with the Blue Plus, they really sing.

thanks dave . i will give it a shot said:
If you want to borrow an SPS DE let me know, I have one. Its not as blue as the 14K XM. You can try that out, but you'll definitely want the Blue Plus T-5's. Hankzilla saw them on my tank and swooned.

We are having a group buy right now that includes T-5's.. you can get them 20% from reefgeek if you're interested.

I would stay away from "actinic" VHO bulbs and go with the Blue bulbs. I also wouldn't consider halides a good way to make the colors pop on your zoanthids. I love halides said:
I am running T5's and they have the 10K and antinic which are blue? What is the difference that you are talking about when you say stay away from the antinic and go with the blue? :?
