Coating/dipping metal to make it safe?

[I'm going to pick up some rare earth magnets to use to glue maxijets onto to use in my 92G so they don't fall off!

Question is what to dip/coat them in since they are nickel coated so there is no reaction in the water. I would then glue one to the powerhead and put the other on the outside of the tank.

Suggestions/Concerns?]

[Keith I know Steve bought some type of magnets that he used to do the same thing. I know he told me they were working out well. I do not remember him saying anything about covering them in plastic, you might email him and see what he used.]

[I did the exact same thing. I cut a piece of egg-crate for the inside and outside and put the magnets in the holes. I then got a really thin sheet of plastic for each side of the crate. I filled all the holes liberally with silicone, then put the plastic on the front and back, and sealed all around the edges.

After months in the tank, I finally pulled them out. Only one leaked, and the magnet in that compartment did rust, but only a little.

It worked well. You could also try that iron-on laminate plastic or the liquid rubber you get at home depot or lowe's. A good coat of epoxy would do it as well.]

[Keith,
Would you mind sharing where you are going to get the magnets from? I ran across some old ones I had this last weekend and started wondering how easy it would be to do what you are attempting. Then I realized the magnets were way too weak for that and kind'a dropped the idea. Also wasn't sure about sealing them either. I'll follow along and hope you will post your findings/results/costs with it.]

[I know that there is a material you can purchase at hardware stores that you can dip the ends of tools such as a cresent wrench in. It creates a plastic coat that dries. I've seen it before but can't remember the name. Is it reef safe? I am not sure if the plastic coat leeches off any chemicals but I think it is safer than the metal.

[Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Ron, The Mag Floats would probably work but the problem I have with them is that for their size they aren't very strong. I'm going to use them on MaxiJet 1200s on a wavemaker so there will be quite a bit of force on there. That being said I think I would have to use the big ones and that would just be an eyesore.

I think I'm just going to get some of the clear liquid plastic from TAP and see how it works out!

Waterbeing I haven't got the magnets yet but will probably order from eBay.

I'm leaning toward these Magnet Link which should be plenty strong but are nice and compact!

Rick I'll see what Steve is using. Thanks]

[A year or so ago I bought a 5lb kit of Magic-Sculpt for a project, and I keep finding uses for it. They claim it never hardens up, unless mixed, and mine hasn't yet.

The 5lb kit would be enough to last a lifetime for most people, and this is handy stuff. It would probably be perfect for what you are trying to do. On their FAQ page it says it is aquarium safe (with an extra day or two to cure to be extra-safe).

It's basically two-part resin that takes a little while to cure, and is soft and hand-workable like clay. I can vouch that it cures rock-hard and can't see how it would ever leak.

Unfortunately you wouldn't find any of it locally, and would have to order it from their site. Here's a link to their FAQ.

The stuff does get a little tacky when handling it, but you can dip it in water, or dip your fingers in water to alleviate that. (just do not wipe your hands on any cloth that you care about, voice of experience here ;) )

Plumber's Putty would probably work just as well from one of the local hardware stores, but would be more of a mess to handle (I think) and would cure faster, so you would have less time to smooth it out and shape it. It would also cost more per ounce, but would come in smaller amounts.

Anyway, I thought this stuff might be good for what you are trying to do, I keep finding little things to fix with it, and it seems like a pretty well-kept secret because it's not in stores.]
