Clowns will stay in an adolescent stage till it turns male or female I have read. Usually the stronger one will turn female and the other will turn male and the others will be in a holding pattern till one of them pass away. They do live quite a long time as mine are 5 years old and some people have said they have had theirs for over 12 years. Then the male will turn female and the next in line will become the male. Hope that makes since to you. Not saying we can keep 5 in our tanks as they will get very dominate and when they do lay eggs they get really aggressive around the clutch. They will run my yellow tang off, which is about 4 times the size of them, once they are caring for the eggs.

As far as a skimmer you can get by without one but it help a whole lot in the water and help you keep a good quality water in your tank. People do it but they are always doing a lot of water changes and it also will depend on the size of the tank and the bio load you are keeping in it.

Hope this info helps and if you have more question feel free to ask.
