Clown's playing in sand?

So my clown's are constantly what looks like playing in the sand. I think they are just trying to move the sand but I haven't been able to figure out why yet.

It seems like they are trying to dig deeper into the sand. Does anybody else have this happen with their clowns?

I'll try and post a couple of pictures tonight when I get home to show you what I'm talking about.

They're looking for a place to spawn. It's kinda like nesting, when a bird builds a nest to lay its eggs. Clowns do the same thing.

Yep... I've got a female maroon clown who isn't content if she hasn't got the middle of the tank bare, and 8" of sand in the corners... Grr...

Alright cool, I thought it might have had something to do with them spawning when they first started doing it but since I have never seen her lay eggs I wasn't sure anymore.

Yeah they have started to get a nice little cave going underneath one of the rocks.

My female maroon was doing that so I bought a bunch of small frags of pom pom xenia and created a little spot for her. She doesn't dig anymore, just chills there.

My female clown does the same thing... but she picked up a bad habit from my jawfish, she picks up sand and spits it out at her. She also swirls sand when she's upset...like when the turbo snail is too close to the eggs, a hermit is too close to the eggs... or when she wants to make a mess :)
