Clown Fish Results

After almost 3 years of posting, I'm finally going to try to attach some pictures of recently hatched clown fish. Hope this works.

The first pic is of the 2nd hatch of approximately 30 on 8/2. They won't stay still enough to count.

Second pic is of first hatch and of 4 of 8 that survived that hatch on 6/23.

In both hatches, male is a black false perc and female an orange false perc.

Man I really want to try this myself. Once i get my new tank up and my mated clowns start spawning again.

How much time does it take to care for them? I heard most of the work is raising their different stages of food.

The primary food you need to raise for the first week or so are rotifers, and lots of them. After that, you can start with powdered food and eventually frozen cyclopeeze. First week is critical, because they go through a metamorphisis. After that, it gets somewhat time intensive with water changes. I do daily changes for about the first month. Reef Central has a wealth of info available in their Fish Breeding Forum, and you can get answers to your questions from people that have done this for a long time. Frank Marini, a primary founder of MARSH (Houston) is extremely knowledgeable and will be a presenter at Next Wave.

Also, Frank Perkins has a a different routine which does deviate from the supposed norm, and is working well for him. Maybe he'll jump in and go through his procedures?

One thing that is extremely necessary is patience. It takes a number of attempts with alot of failures. Still don't have it down pat. Good indicater for me may be this Sunday evening. My first mated pair has laid about 200 eggs, their largest clutch so far. I'll see what happens next week.

Eggs were supposed to hatch last night and they did not. With these two clowns, their eggs always hatched on the sixth night. Had to return the eggs to the parent tank. One good thing about clownfish, they are usually good parents. Male clown went right to the eggs when I returned them. So now they'll be hatching tonight. I'll check them out after the second day. Even with a hatch, they still have to get through metamorphysis (approx 1 week).

Successful hatch Monday night. Can only estimate at somewhere between 30 - 50. Usually loose a few during the first week. Need to get them through metamorphosis, which is about one week from hatching. As soon as they can tolerate brighter light, will try to get a picture.

i have given it some thought and i am thinking of trying to mate my maroon clowns and raising some babies but i definently need to read up some more on it anybody know of any books out there or websites

thanks rick

Here are some of the fry from Monday night's hatch. Now that they can tolerate light, I was able to get a much better estimate of between 50 - 60. Next few days are critical with metamorhosis. Would be nice to maintain this number after metamorphosis.

Checked the flower pot in the parent tank. Seems like the pair were busy yesterday evening/last night. It has another clutch of eggs. Do have a larval tank available, so we'll do this again.

How do you have the parents set up? Are they in there own tank? Host anenome? Bare tank except the pot? Thanx for the effort by the way.

Parent tank is a 60g cube. They have their BTA right next to their clay flower pot for their eggs. There is also a pygmy angel, a banded coral shrimp, and 2 peppermints. Really need to work on catching everyone else and just have the parents in the tank. I'm suspecting some predation from the other inhabitants. Also caught a whelk in the tank about a week ago, but have seen no other whelk. Believe they can get into fish eggs and chomp down.

The 10/17 clutch of eggs was a fizzle, but we have a scheduled hatch tonight. For whatever reason, eggs were hatching on the 6th night, but are now hatching on the 7th night. I did move those eggs to a larval tank on the 6th night, and with no hatch, moved them back to the parent tank. This has worked in the past, but not this time. More and more, I'm believing that stress plays a major role during the first few days.

Attached is an updated picture of my 10/6 hatch. They're all balled up in the corner of the tank. Can't count them, but I'm estimating about 50 total. This has been the highest survival group so far.
