Closed loop setup ?

[What exactly is a "closed loop" and what are the benefits/purpose. I have some idea of what it is but not sure I know all the details.

Thanks

[If you'll go to my site (is there something wrong with the internet today?!?!), you can click on the Closed Loop link to see how I set one up on my tank, even though it isn't drilled.

It is used to provide current yet not have ugly powerheads in your tank.]

[A closed loop is nothing more than a way to create alot of water movement without the use of alot of powerheads. Many people are having their new tanks custom drilled to accomodate their loop. The loop usually consists of a drain and many PVC plumbed exits all hooked up to a massive pump. I ordered my 150 gallon drilled with 4 1.5" exits and 1 1.5" drain. I used 1.5" spa jet directional nozzles for the returns and a simple PVC standpipe with a strainer for the drain. I chose an Ampmaster 3000 (3000 gph) for the pump since I want this tank to be mainly SPS. I'll try to attatch some pictures of the plumbing as I was setting it up.]
