cleaning?

I am not really new to the hobby, however I have not had a tank set up in some years and I have forgotten a lot so I have a newb question. I have a bunch of left over equipment that I want to sell, however it is all still crusted over with crap(protein skimmer) and dead coraline algae. I tried scrubbing with just water and I got pretty much nowhere. I am hoping that I can soak the items in a rubber maid bin in water and a light dish soap. But I do not want to do that if it will ruin the items and make them unusable in a marine tank. I just want to know if I can use the soap as long as I thoroughly rinse the items afterwards. I don't want to sell nasty items to people that they will have to clean before they can even use it. That's just rude.

I hear people say don't wash them with soap...but I always do and nothing happen. I just feel that it clean of the slimmy goey stuff easier and cleaner. But thats just my opinion.
 
thanks! I have stuff soaking in a vinegar solution. I am going to leave it overnight and clean it tomorrow.
