I'm about to start a new 29g nano cube and am wondering about the sand bed. It's such a small tank to start with that I'm not going to go DSB but don't like the look of a bare bottom tank. I was thinking about an inch of live sand. How often would this require vacuuming if I went with an inch or less?

Well in a 29, a deep bed would be useless and attract a lot of detritus and bump your nitrates up, so stick with a shallow bed of 1" or less. Vaccuming should be done with every water change, so that would be weekly or every other week at a minimum. Get a sand vaccum and drain the water while vaccuming. You'll be amazed how much crud comes out.
