Cleaning filter help

I have a 30g with a hob filter, do you just submerge the whole thing in vinegar? I have algae where the waterfall is..

Scrape the algae off... If your looking to remove and clean, then yeah, 50:50 water vinegar then water soak. If that's your main filtration that wouldn't be my first recommendation...

It's my only filtration.. What would you recommend? Junk goes all into my tank when I mess with it so usually leave it be.

The "junk" is coming from somewhere. Algae on the filter is just another sign of something else. (I.e. over feeding, excess light)

How should I clean the algae off the filter, just scrape all in it and try to keep it from getting in the tank?

Put a net below the drip pan and scrape/wipe it off..

Turn off the filter for a few minutes to scrape it away with a credit card, being careful not to drop any into the display. Once clean, turn the filter back on.
