Clam ID

Is it a gigas? MY LFS has had this little guy for a long time and I have been fighting buying him forever. I finally gave in. If he is a gigas is there anything special I should know. I have croceas, derasas, and maximas.

Thanks
Angela

Sure looks like a Gigas and it will get huge. I have one almost the same coloration that was about 4" when I got him 3 years ago and it is getting close to 10"-12" across. Check out my tank - the tank is almost 34" in width to give you some perspective. If you look closely at the right of the clam, you can see my maroon clown peeking out. I have not had to do anything special with mine. Good luck.

Beautiful tank! That clown has a death wish. Thanks for the reply. Huge is good and surely he will be ok in the 265 for a long time. He doesn't look 100% healthy to me but I'm hoping he will be ok. I really like him. I dont know if it's normal or not but when I was putting him in the tank he didnt close up tight like my other types of clams do when I mess with them. I think he may have had a foot injury or else lost his foot. He has been there a long time though like I said so he's obviously pretty tough. I just hope I didn't wait to long to buy him.

Thanks for the compliment. Knock on wood, but the clam has never attempted to close on the clown. Do the edges of your clam ever extend beyond the shell? Hopefully it will settle in. From my experience, if a foot is badly damaged, they will die within days so if yours was damaged and it is still alive, that is probably a good sign. Keep us posted.

the spots are indicative of one i believe, how big is he, i havnt seen a small one, would love to have a small one, you should grab him, finish the collection

He is very small. He's maybe 1" to 1 1/2". I did grab him. I bought him today. He hasn't extended beyond his shell yet. The pet store had him for way over a month at least and he's been kinda falling all over the tank there. He was in a coral tank on egg crate so never had anything to attach to. I do hope hes alright. Probably would have had a better shot if I had got him when he first came in rather than letting him sit there for a few months in less than optimum water. I dont mean that to sound bad. I just dont think she monitors ca/alk/ph/mg or anything other than nitrates.

Angela, from the pics, it seems that the clam is doing perfectly fine. I have a few of them and have for quite a while. Only one opens with the mantle extended over the outside shell.
This one is about 10-11 inches, but that lil one of yours is toooooo cute!!!

Lee.......awesome cubed display!
