With our cool weather it is a great time to perform chiller maintenance by cleaning both inside (back flushing) and the outside (clean or replace filters) for a smooth efficient operation this summer.
We did ours yesterday and it was quick and easy.
For the back flush we simply un-hooked the main lines going to the chiller and replaced with two short hoses one of which was connected to a pump. From there we connected the hose with the pump to the output of the chiller and the other hose to the input to the chiller, this is reverse from normal, in the out and out the in for the back flush.
We then placed both pump and open end of the other hose into an old salt bucket then filled half way with vinegar and turned the pump on. It did not take long for the vinegar to become cloudy with the build-up inside the chiller. We let it run this way for a few hours in order to dissolve any build-up. After a few hours we replace the vinegar with fresh water and repeated the processes but only ran for a short time. After that we connected the chiller backup into its normal configuration.
From there we cleaned the filter for the air circulation through the chiller and we were done.
Note: if you are using a feed pump for the chiller it is a good time to clean it as well.
