Chiller Advise.. HELP !!

I have a Chiller, Model SL-300A, and it will NOT cool down my aquarium water. It IS a large tank...250 gallons with 3, 250 watt, Metal Halide lamps. Obviously it does get hot under the vented (fan) hood. I set the Chiller to 76 degrees and it will NEVER get there...

Yes, the room stays warm (around 81-84 degrees) WITH a lousy air conditioner running but the Chiller will NEVER drop below 80 degrees until late at night.

I realize THIS Chiller will NOT cool the water down a 'hell of a lot' but damn, it should do better than this. It DID when I bought it about a year ago. Vents and Coils stay cleaned by the way.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ron

Ron, what brand is this chiller? Also, are the coils cold to touch when it's running? During the daylight hours, is it running constantly?

Hi Ivan.

The Chiller is a Sealine, Model SL 300A. I 'believe' that when I took the back OFF, the coils were NOT cold. Cool perhaps, but I was a little afraid to touch them. BUT, I do NOT recall them being cold...or a little chilly for that point.

What do you think?

Thanks for the reply, BUT I'm not too sure about that. I believe its fine. Personally, I think the room is too warm and the chiller can't keep up. Especially with a 250 gallon tank. I have sent an e-mail to the Manuafacturer.

I put a small fan behind my chiller to help pull the heat from the exhaust fan. I have a 1/3 hp chiller on a 150 and it keeps the tank around 78. However if the house gets over 86 the tank will get up to 80. We are not using the a/c right now. We just keep screen doors and windows open. I'm not sure how much lomger before we break down and turn on the a/c. Now I'm just rambling.

i think something is wrong with the chiller two people i know have a1/3 horse chillers and run 1700 watts of vho's and mh and their temp is never an issue....might do a google search but i think if you put a thermometer on the coils or somewhere inside the chiller the thermometer temp will show you how efficient your chiller is

Can you put a temp probe right at the output of the chiller? See if it's any different than at it's input to see if it's doing anything at all.

Our heat pump unit sometimes freezes itself up or also compressor locks - I'd guess these units work similarly.
