Chemiclean...???

I just dosed up with Chemiclean to help with a cyano problem in my refugium (no cyano in the DT)...Had water tested at LFS and all numbers came out great...cyano in refugium is bad and has choked out my algae. My question is should I cut off or reduce the refugium light during this time period (currently on 24hrs/day)...also should I increase flow through the refugium during this treatment?...or should I just keep everything as is and just continue with treatment?...thanks for all your help.

How old is your Refugium bulb?

+1 Given no Cyano in your DT, I would think your refugium light would be the source of your outbreak.

If you are treating the entire system, leave the flow as is. You don't have to turn off the lights. Make sure your skimmer is turned off, and remove any carbon from the system. After three days, do a 25% water change (or greater), turn on the skimmer and add new GAC (granulated activated carbon). Your skimmer will likely overflow with watery skimmate. Just dump it out as often as you need to, replacing that lost liquid with more saltwater. It will take a few hours for the skimmer to settle down, and it will 'waste' a lot of water at first. Have plenty of saltwater on hand, ready to go.

Thanks Marc...and my tank made it just fine through my 8 day vacation btw...my clowns really enjoyed the regular feeding, they were so fat they could hardly swim. I am sure that added to the cyano issue...loving the feeder chimney deal you made for me...as well as the RO/DI system...fantastic !!!

The chaeto in my refugium is covered in cyano...can I take it out and rinse it off or will it disappear on it's own or should I throw it away and buy new??

You can do a water change. When you do that, take out the chaetomorpha and do a dunk & rinse in the used water. I had a bad cyano outbreak in my refugium years ago and I set up five buckets in a row and did a rinse from bucket to bucket to bucket to get rid of the majority of the red stuff. Then I put it back in the refugium, which I'd also cleaned out. Made a huge difference.

My refugium was 29g with a 4" sandbed, so it was a real job cleaning that out since it was under the 280g completely out of reach.

...Day 2 of Chemiclean treatment and Cyano looks unphased...bummer...Mark, I will use your tactic for the chaeto and my refugium isn't the easiest access either :-/

Chemiclean usually takes three days, and if you still see cyano you may need to dose again. That means adding more days before the skimmer can carbon can run again.

Do I need to do a water change in between dosing ?? said:
No, you are still trying to kill the cyano bacteria. Siphon out what you can to help reduce the volume of it.

How/where did you apply the CC? said:
You can pour it anywhere you like. I prefer to mix it up in a cup of tank water, stirred well. Then I pour it into the sump, but you can pour it into the display if you like.
