ChemiClean Question

What should I see happen to the cyano when I dose with Chemiclean? Will it dissolve and disappear? Or does it die and I have to siphon it out?

I've searched all of the threads about it on this board but nobody every really explained what happens to the cyano.

If it dies, it dissolves. Which is why it is important to do the water change to get that stuff out of the water. Your skimmer will go crazy when you restart it after the 48 hour period, so be ready for that. You should make more saltwater to replace what is being lost.

Last time I dosed, my skimmer was on its lowest setting and still dumped out 9.5g of water in 3 hours.

i had to do two treatments till i got rid of the stuff in my tank...my refugium still has a little bit but i think it is cause I need to put a mini jet in there to put more flow.

But water change is good to do between treatments if you have to dose it again

Thanks for the input. I dosed this morning and have replacement water ready. I will double check the instructions but I think it says to turn off the carbon and skimmer for 24hours and then do the water change after 48 hours.

I can see lots of places that the cyano is dissolving so if it does not all disappear I will siphon off as much as possible and then start a second dose on Monday.

An interesting thing was that my maxima clam had a lot of cyano growing over the scutes. When the cyano started to dissolve my hermit crabs flocked to the clam to I guess clean out detrinus that was under the cyano and caught in the scutes.

Also, for anyone reading this, this may be obvious to most but Cyano Bacteria is not always red. Mine is green and I think it can also be black. It took a long time for me to figure out I had Cyano because everyone always talks about red slime algae.

Steven, you are supposed to let it work for 48 hours. No skimming, no carbon. THEN do the changes.

Its an oxidizer and it will dissolve it. Dont run the skimmer for at least 48 hrs and do a massive water change.

Dont be suprised if it comes back though. Chimiclean is just a bandaid for the underlying problem that if not corrected will probably re-appear again later down the road.
