Cheato shelf life?

Question on cheato. My stats first. 20 gallon nano, 25 lbs LR, 25 lbs Live Sand. I DO NOT have a sump yet. Most of what I read is about putting it in your sump. I went to my LFS and asked if they had macroalgae. She gave me a big ball for free and said just stick it in my tank since I don't have a sump. My question is, how long do I keep it in my tank? I just put in behind my rocks hidden out of the way. What benefit am I getting from it?

put it behind the rocks but make sure it still gets some light. The cheato will consume nitrates which is a good thing.

you leave it in there for ever. It will grow and you will need to thin it out by physically removing some of it every so often. it is also a safe haven for pods and other critters that are beneficial to the tank.
 
I went sumpless and skimmerless for a couple years and my tank was great but I recommend adding a sump and a small skimmer to your tank. It makes things so much easier. And you could do the entire sump set up for abotu $100. Just use a 10 gallon tank and add baffles. Then throw on a eshopps hang on back overflow.
