Cheato question (trimming)

A fellow member gave me a little cheato when I started my tank. I had probably a fist size ball of it. It has now grown to cover the entire foot print of my fuge. Although the fuge is not fully loaded with it. It goes about half way down into the water. I typically leave the light on 24 hours a day. I've got all kind of critter in there...it kind of scary.
Anyway, I've noticed a little algea growth in the display. Probably due to my over feeding. It just that my fish eat like pigs, and I don't want them starving. Should I trim my cheato? Has it reached a stage that it's not taking in all the nitrates? I've test my water and everything looks good. 0 nitrates, 0 nitrites, 0 phosphates, 8.2 pH, 450 cal, 9 Alk. I guess let me know what the consensus is on trimming cheato. I need a little more flow I know, plus my crabs are killing all my snails, but I got 60 more coming to me next week, so hopefully that will help too.
Thanks!

IMHO, if all of the prime lighted area has Cheato in it, it's probably time to prune it back some...

Also, I try to roll my cheato around every few days, mix things up so what was on the bottom is on the top, and maybe even push it down into the water column if possible so it has more room to grow up towards the light...

Okay good to know. I need to trim then.

Maybe I should give some away instead of throwing it out. There are so many pods. I hate to throw it out.

Here's what it looked like and I rolled it fo now.

Definitely! Post in the sale forum saying you have Free Cheato, and you should get some nibbles...

If all else fails, check with your LFS and see if they want it, but I too hate throwing the stuff away...

I'm such a big softie.. when I have to throw some out, I shake it and make sure all the little brittle stars are out before trashing it.

You do that too, eh?

And although we're far enough from a body of salt water it shouldn't matter, TECHNICALLY anything from your tank that's going to go in the trash should spend 24 hours in the freezer first to make sure it's dead and can't become invasive anywhere...

I will take a little bit..I live in Flower Mound send me a pm I will pic some up...Will have to be tomorrow as I am still out of town for Father's Day.
