Changing sand beds

I am lookin to change my sand out to a black sand bed. I am curious what the easiest and safest method might be?

Also, what are some of the cons of having a black sand bed?

Black sand is magnetic. You have to be careful with your mag float. It also shows detritus easily. I love the look of black sand in my 20L. Of course being a 20L it's really easy to keep clean.

I haven't changed my sand, but if I did I would just vacuum it out over a month doing water changes.

Keeping it clean and looking black. Every spec of live rock dust, food, bits of sand on a coral, broken shell, etc, etc, etc. is going to stand out in stark contrast to all all black sand bed.
More or less impossible to keep it looking clean for more than a day or two.

+1 on magnetic and can scratch the glass and over time the bed never stays black as detritus an pieces of live rock break off.

well, i hoping it might be easier to keep clean in my 12g nano cube. Hmm.... didnt know it was magnetic though,

That is what I did with my 65G.

I added some of this along with my completely black sand: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA00Y08Y0303&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleMKP&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleMKP-_-pla-_-NA-_-NA

I have not had as many magnetic particles but what I found is quite coarse. Not good for rays, garden eels, etc.

The pistol shrimp goes nuts in it. I know he has at least the front left third of it dug out by now.
