Ok so the sugar fine sand I have is driving me crazy. I am thinking about changing it out for some coarser. Here is what I am thinking. Change it out in sections over the coarse of 2-3 weeks. I think I can remove about 75% of it but want to be careful Round the live rock.

Has anyone here done this? Got any suggestions for me on how to do this and maybe whAt type of sand.

I siphon mine out every now and then when I do water changes. Maybe twice a year. I rinse it several times in RO water before I put it back. I don't do any more than 15 to 20% of the surface at a time. After the sand is clean I put it back in the tank with a wide mouth funnel and a long piece of PVC so it stays relatively in the place I want it to. May not be the right thing to do but it works for me.

How old is the sandbed now? I used Tropic Eden Reeflakes, which for the most part stays in place.

It's over a year old. I am hoping for something that stays in place and is also easier to clean.

Just wanted to give an update.

I couldn't find Tropic Eden Reeflakes, so I went with caribsea seaflor special grade reef. Saturday I took out a section of my old sand and replaced it with this stuff. So far things look good. No spike in Nitrates or Phosphates. I plan to do another section this saturday. At the rate I am going its going to take me a total of 4-5 weeks to complete. There are some spots I will not be able to get to, but I am not to concerned about this.
