Cause of HLLE Discovered

It's being debated on various media sites, including Facebook. It isn't the carbon but rather the dust, more than likely.

Yeah, the pelletized stuff seemed to cause much smaller effects in the study, as it has a lot less fines. It has me thinking I need to upgrade to better carbon (I'm using the cheap lumpy stuff at the moment) and probably use it more sparingly. I am curious as to what could actually be happening at the microscopic level.

Anyone care to wager how much more livestock health issues will come from a generalized "fear of carbon" than will ever be prevented by a reduction in cases of carbon-fines-induced HLLE? Folks said:

Ok. I'm using the Kent brand carbon. Is this a good brand or should I be using another???? said:
The BRS "Rox 0.8" carbon is tough to beat, in terms of both cleanliness (very little dust) and adsorption rate. My second choice (when I'm out of that and don't want to wait for shipping) is usually the Marineland Black Diamond. Haven't tried the Kent carbon.

Here's info on pretty much everything you would ever want to know about carbon, and how to choose what's best. http://joejaworski.wordpress.com/2008/05/09/does-a-reef-tank-need-carbon/ Also.... marineland carbon is actually pretty good when stacked up against some of the very expensive brand names. I use the lignite carbon from bulk reef supply myself. Here's another interesting article that shows more brand comparison's. http://www.pets-warehouse.com/carbon.htm What is interesting is that a lot of the carbon on the market comes from the same supplier with maybe a step or two taken out of the process, then it's just rebranded. Interesting. I notice that most of the studies referenced in the second article are pre-2000; I wonder how much some of these brands have changed with all of the consolidation of manufacturers the past few years?
