Carribean Live Rock???

I am in the process of setting up my second reef aquarium and will need at least 120 lbs of live rock. I see that one of the internet stores has carribean live rock? http://www.intmarinefish.com/liverock.html is this a good choice. The price is good but I don't know anything about this type of rock. My first reef I purchased rock at the lfs and it cost me almost $600 for 100 pounds. I wold like to save some money this time if at all possible but I don't want to get something I will be unhappy with.

I got 60% base rock and 40% fiji premium that saved me money the corraline will start to grow on the base rock, plus i used "Purple Up" I think this stuff made the base rock color up quicker.

Cannot say enough about using Reefer Rock's base rock along with cured live rock. The Reefer Rock is light weright, collected from an old seabed in the Miami area, and has more surface area that any live rock, cured or uncured you might buy. Only exception would be live rock that is made from base rock. 50/50 or 60/40 would work well. Nice thing about using Reefer Rock is that they will e-mail you a picture of the rock before shipping. We were able to request larger pieces for our 215 when we saw what had been selected originally, and they did accomodate.

Good luck

FYI - Reeferrocks is no longer in business.
Hirocks.com also appears to no longer be valid.

I purchased Marshall island LR from livestockusa.org and got a great deal. You might want to check that site out. They do sell great LR. There is a pic of my LR in the customer comment section.

i know it might be a little bit of a drive but franks tanks sells rock by the box at close to or around 3.00 a pound for fiji ultra premium you might want to give him a call

best of luck

Caribbean live rock is very dense and I personally find the shapes to be lackluster. You'll need more of it to fill up as much volume as a comparable amount of atlantic LR (fiji, buna, marshall, etc.). I would go with something else unless you are stuck on making a biotope tank.

Thanks, I have decided to stay away from the carribean rock and intmarine. I am looking at reefscience.com (expensive) but claims rock is cured and ships air freight from North Carolina. I am also looking at The Marine Center which is here in Dallas area. They have a sale on fiji premium for $169 per 50lb box delivered. Any one have experience or thoughts on either of these suppliers.

I bought LR from The Marine Center about 5 years ago, but, alas, they moved to California several years ago and are no longer in the Dallas metroplex...
