carpet anemone dying?

I've been reading all of the anemone postings, great advice. I've had my carpet for about a week now. He looked great last night, he was starting to move around. This morning he was back down at the bottom of the tank, but wasn't looking to good. He had one white clump coming out of his mouth. I hoped for the best and went to work. I came home to find him with his mouth torn open and big clumps of white stuff showing. His mouth is ripped, some regular mouth showing and then white stuff showing. Is this the end? He is facing away from me otherwise I'd send a picture. He's still making his foot bigger and my clown is all over him. Tank tests just fine, nothing has changed except for the fact that he is moving around and he hasn't taken to eating yet.

I"m hoping he can make a come back, but at the same time I don't want to leave him in the tank over night and loose all of my other fish.

Thanks for your help,
Terri

What color is he and what color is he supposed to be? If he's white then he's been stressed and expelled all his zooxanthelae (sp!?!?!?) which are his symbiotic algae buddies. Just be patient and see what happens. Also how big are the pieces of food you're giving him? Try just a couple mysis shrimp, I wouldn't go with anything bigger than my pinky nail. Even if he does take it he may spit it out later. Patience is key. If your lighting is strong enough then you will just have to wait it out. If his mouth is gaping it could spell disaster but maybe again not. They're so fickle.. Let him walk around and mope for a while is all I can tell you.

I'd also recommend seperating his clown friend from him. Clowns can expedite the death process in suffering 'nems and can also help some adjust faster, however since yours is so obviously upset... Getthe clown out of the picture for a while.

Well, he definately died. My clown kept picking at him just like you said and I believe he wasn't helping the situation. However, now I'm worried about my clown. He keeps hoovering over the area that the anemone was at. Is there anything I can do for him? I don't have any other anemones for him to host. Should I get another? I'm kind of gun shy right now. The damsel and the six line wrasse have started picking on him.

There are other things that they will host in, frilly / fuzzy mushrooms being one of the easiest to keep. That being said, there's no guarantee that they will host a mushroom (or an anemone, for that matter.)

My clowns initially hosted in pulsing xenias.

I've added on anenome and the tomato immediately took to it.

Maybe the opposite will be true for you.

That thing is whiter than Julia Roberts teeth after a bleaching!

Where did you buy it? Make sure to let the seller know that the 'nem they sold you was completely bleached out and died quickly. Just to let them know that their source sucks.

You want your 'nems to look dirty, never bleach white. If you ever want to take a stab at another anemone I have a cream colored bubble tip I could sell you. I'm nursing it since my bf bought it very white, seems to be doing very well for the past month. :) (shameless I know) False percs seem to have a harder time hosting in nems. My Clarkii hosted for about 5 minutes in my pulsing xenia before nose diving into their own anemones. It was cute. :D

They are very fickle though but with enough patience maybe you can take another stab at it.

I bought him at the Fish Gallery off Greenville in Dallas. I thought that they weren't suppossed to be white, I should have done more research. Honestly I think I was a bit caught up in the moment. We were looking at a bubble tip and were redirected to the carpet. He looked beautiful....just white. What type of anemone would you recommend for my clown? I'd love to get him one, I just don't want to spend a fortune again....

Thanks for your advice and help.

They're not supposed to be white, they need to be dirty looking and with their mouths nearly impossible to see. Another sign is stickiness to the touch but bubble tips aren't sticky at all to me, but mine do start retracting quickly to the touch. Bubble tips are also renowned for their ability to split quickly in the home aquarium.

My recommendation is to buy a tank-raised anemone from another member.
There are many anemones to choose from though. My dream is to get my hands on a Sebae but they're notoriously hard to keep. Keep in mind clowns don't need anemones but you'll probably just get one for the bragging rights. :)
