Carpet anemone - Carpet anemone

[I've been reading up on these. I've like to get one. Anyone here have thoughts of these things? I've heard they like to eat fish, but I doubt that's true.

Do these things frag? If not, how do they propagate?

Thanks]

Yes on the fish, we feed ours Silversides.
Yes on the Prop/Split and divide, like BTA's.
Not much to think of these things, there pretty slow with life.
Clowns love them and there it is, a bit of eye candy but not much more to wonder about.
Slice one down the middle and you might be the Proud Poppa of two, of course after they OOOzzzzz and heal, that is if your conditions are right and they do not die on Ya. They are a mess if they die and they turn to slimy Jelly that screws a persons whole tank up. If you see them get slimmy and ozzziee like on one side, like where it might seem to turn blobish, fast, yank it out, because it might be dieing and if it turns completly Slimish, you will foul the system and might cause yourself even much more trouble.

[Are you even talking about something in the same universe as the subject of the post? These are not corals. You can't cut them. They *WILL* get infections from scars that they develope, much like a fish will.]

That's funny :laugh long: you made me laugh. I've been at this fun since 17 yrs?, something like that, 1 year before my 16yr old son's BD. I do not know if other people have tryed it, but I have cut BTA'S and other ANEM's and if you work with a dip solution and treat the cut area for a few days, by pulling the item and do a proper treat/dip process, you to can pull this off, to clone many types of Anem's or Coral.
I am guessing that some people do not experiment very often. I have owned, 40-50 BTA's and probably 30-40 Carpets, with many tricks and trys.
Coral is a piece of CAKE to grow and divide. I am curently working on crossbreading Zoo's and splicing types of Zenias and Zenia family types. I cut them and do a simple wash, then rebath them before Caing them togeather with other spiecies. I am also working on Encrusting families, Green star, grogonian and others.
I am charting the growths and patterns of rejections and ones that grow togeather well.

Happy fishing.]

I hate to cut this conversation short, but you'll have to excuse me. I have to go get my shovel. Bottom line is: I don't care what your experience level *might* or *might not* be, it's irresponsible to encourage someone to "slice one down the middle" when you're talking about a creature prone to infections.]

For those of not a timid sort. It is not a responsible nor irresponsible question of what another wants to do in life. If I asked a person to jump off a bridge? who would follow? and there in lies the question of the who is behind, in the first place.
A person is to speek on there behalf and not to impose there will on others and or to speek for others.
I meanshion the need to follow rules of the game and thus a person should know what they are doing in life, with all animals, big and small. I would not House a 400 lb Cat Tiger in my Apt, but some might just to that as well, knowing the consiquences.
He who before goes I? The chior is listening, I have been in one for 8+ years, so I am listening, bair your sole if need be. I make on menshion of your doings and I would be so gratefull if you indulge me that same.

I think things should be taken with a grain, on the net and if people get on here and do as I say?, God help us all. I speek on what I have done or so on ideas. If a person is to timid in there approaches in life, well that is why there is many kinds of icecream, one for you and one for me.
The Topic is answered by me from my approaches and this debate on a NON- wrong or right issue(in my opin) is not the Topic, TOPIC" Any IDEAS on this!" TOPIC, get it!, and those are MY! ideas, speek your own and God bless you!. If you want to bicker, please with your wife, family, boyfriend and or girlfriend or whomever suites your fancy. I have stated what I do or can be done and if you are trying to change my or my neighbors ways, please start in your neighborhood, because it is a big world and live Corals and Anen's will be split, like it or not, it is NOT and aborshion issue. Write the congress if you like.

Why do you say a colony?

You can't put saddlebacks and fales percullas in the same tank without trouble can you?

BTW, does anyone have a carpet to sell/trade?]

Personally I would ask the question of the," ah ,? I guess" part of the answer/help line.

In my slight time with this hobby, I would say that given the right size of a tank/system,(200+ maybe even 400ish gallons)a person can house the both types of clowns with no problem. The Saddles are a fisty pain, but if a person was to have a couple of Anems and at different end of the tank, I am sure there would be little to deal with in the pecking order.

I am sure one of the Sponcers would be more than happy to help you on the Carpet purchase frount. I would sugest that you contact Clebure Marine/ Cody, I think you might get a plesent surprise in the $'s dept, if you do Comp pricing.
I would look into your space, before getting one and future plans for the space that you might intend for one of these. Well feeding will get these Carpets into a 8-10-12 inch Dia size and that could cramp your tank.
Just a Thunk on the ideas. I might not sugest the Splitting of a Carpet or BTA untill a person has 10-20 years of dealing with this stuff, but it will all come in time. I figure that after a while, most people want to see what they can Really! do in the hobby and be proactive in the research ideas, that is when the fun really begins.
Just my personal ideas, do not try this at home without Adult super-vissions for the future.
:laugh long:
Good luck on your search, units0000 and Gods speed.

Some of the stuff above is General thoughts and not directed towards anybody, but just observances of behaviors towards others negitive thoughts. I believe everybody is entitled to there beliefs and dreams, but the slippery sloap has begun and the thought police is watching and editing, so wisper carefully, because we all know what's at the bottom of the pile. :laugh long: The good people cast the better Stones.]

By the by, forgot the say, there are 7-8 tricks when doing spliting, Lugis prep/before and after for 1-2 weeks, part splitting in sequences, ca cotterising, wedding vial insershions, streaching by non-wax dental floss, stitching w/dental, and many others that with a combo approach can get a person great results in many splits of MANY types of animals from the sea.

What did Moma say?," try it you might like it"?, but tread slowly and get a Vet to show a person the ropes.]

[Usually anemones only breed sexually when they are near a lot of other anemones, but its really not relevant. Anemones aren't going to breed sexually in a home aquarium anyway. They will only breed asexually by splitting off a clone of themselves.

The rule of thumb about clowns is that they won't allow any other clowns in their territory, which is usually anywhere within a three-foot bubble of their host. Some clowns, like maroons, like to extend that to line-of-sight. My maroon basically controls my tank, and its about an 8 ft. display area I think. They will kill any other competitive clowns in their territory (including some types of damsels).]

[:;):
I would have to agree on that battling problem. I would say that There! are exceptions to every rule on this idea from Kevin,( nOT TO SAY he is wrong or right) on the Clown issue. I think everybody has there own deal and fish, to which they see and or whatch as there systems over the years evolve, but in ones tank is only ones tank and there are 100,000's of tanks in the world. I do not,( not to say others do) perscribe to the idea that all tank, fish, corals, people are the same robotic entity. I think Everything! is So completly different and when people start lumping fish, coral, people togeather as if, this is the way it all should be, then there lies the rub/shafe of true open mindedness, to see the true potenshial in every orginism. Do not box the world in and you will be happier for it.

I think much is simular and yet at any given sircumstance in a system,(to each there own) things can change or be completly different.

My 8 ft Display 400 system:

2 BTA's, 1 of which,(the larger) the Very large Maroon is hosting, but would go back and forth through 4 ft section of tank to get to the other BTA. I moved the Smaller BTA close to the big one, becasue the three Pec Clowns would be pushed aside while the Maro-C comes over to it. The Maro-C is close to a Large Green Carpet,(LGC) and the large Saddl-C, was hosting the large BTA, but got kicked out by the Maro-C.
Now the plot thickens:
The large BTA is directly above the LGC and the two clowns are not bothered at all, unless one or the other is getting to close to there host.
The Maroon was very pushy with the three other Pec's and Saddl-C, until I moved the smaller BTA next to the large one. Now the tank is as pieceful as can be.
I am guessing that the moral of the story is,(only in my system of course and I speek for no other) that the Saddl-C and or Maroon, can not deal with to many potenshial intruders that might attempt to encroach on there host, so at some point there will be a war frount. I would guess it has to do with the size of the tank and how the perticular fish is and his or her disposishion towards other tank mates.
I do not think it is a given that the fish of any sort behave the same every time and any time they are put in a tank. Every community a person builds is a unique and indivigual system and inhearently has to adjust within its own given sircomstances, to which makes this a completly odd hobby. I think some might have to Opinion that becasue there tanks is this way, that all tanks will be the same, regardless. I was at ALF's home and if many could see what he had done with Temps and Kalk and so on, all the while doing this as the Ney sayers said it could not be done.
Systems and fish/corals adapt and change, so there is an endless amount of possibilities that can be had.

My Saddl-C and Maroon live 6-8 inches apart in a 8 foot tank and are as hapy as clams, whoed Huv thUnK?

gO ahUde and take a bite Of Thute Apple, it's a Big life, don't be scared, you might Not! get your eye poked out. :eek:h: :rool eyes:]

[For what it's worth, I'm thoroughly opposed to cutting an anemone in half, and have stated so on RC as well.

These creatures are definitely a challenge to care for, and many many die in captivity for a variety of reasons. To take a knife to one and cut it in half (even as an experiment) is shocking to me, and saddens me as well.

I'm not posting this to debate the comments above, but to show another perspective. We each view the creatures in our tanks in various ways, and care for them accordingly.

I wish everyone success in caring for their anemones, as they are amazing creatures.]

[I do agree with Marc and if a person was to do this, I would say it should be under guidence from a person whom knows the in's and out's of such a procedsure. I have witnesses this 6-7 times from a chap/Marine-bio guy named Chris in Arilington Va. He did resurch under a chap named Albert Thiel and worked in places such as Indoneisa, Tiland, GBR, Hawaii, FL, S-Africa and so on and got me some of the most beautiful Indo rock that a person could ever believe, some 15 yrs ago.

I think I jumped a bit to a fast/slightly joking idea, to split a Carpet in ones first 10yrs of being in this hobby and maybe a person would never meet such a person as Albert Theil and or Chris in my case. I was guided by a person who did hands on for 3 years and my first tanks were 1(75)2(125's) and 1(200)gallon size tanks, all in the first 8-12 months. I was not a person who had no money going in and I had no quams to do as others had tought me. I think this was in a day that people really cared about tea-Ching others and now I think people think tea-Ching is a Chineese herbal Tea or something. I see some people do not even get out to help people as others did 17+years ago, when I got involved.
I think it is the Computer Age thing. I bought two systems $1,900 each in 1989 and 1 in 1990 and I to started with 2&4 bit mULTIMEDIA oPERATIONS, Wow! that was a walk down memory lane. I bought them for my business and so on I went into many a night reading the garble of books to operate these and started a computer course to boot.
Back to the Fish:
I did less as well, in the fish dept and getting to helping and learnings that I was working on with the Fish/Reef stuff, but I still managed to get my fish fix,( I called it) $ 200-400 per month, for the first 3-4 years. I bought all I could and traveled much to get stuff as well, 2-3-4 States over I would travel for a show or whatever.
I figure if a person does work on Spliting and or even Keeping this stuff, it requires much experimenting ANY WAY! a person looks at it.
Who are we to keep any Coral, " SAY the Indians?" Who are we to Keep any Land or Sky or Person or part of the Earth?
I am Deeply Sadened by the taking of Old Growth. Ever watch Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers?, well there it is, a simular pattern of," we take and use for us". If people try to Grow Coral and pass this on and try to Split things, with reef animals, there will be a way to grow and Stop taking from Mother earth. That is why I like Frags.
I remember 15+ years ago when people said we can never Grow coral and WHAT? happened?. I think if we re-plant the Trees and grow our own coral and Anems and so on, there will be a benifit in the long run. That is why we buy older homes, Yes, I/we could have bought a $389,000 home in Irving, 3 yrs ago, but I said, NO! more new Yuppiee stuff, that I will just tear out and want to put new stuff in and waist even more of this Earth's resorces. So I am re-building this 4,000sq and putting in Lots of Granite and Marble, with not much cost, just time and helping Mother Earth to boot.

I think the Issue/Topic has many Debateable points, but it is a person prefrence issue as well. Some call it Ex-pair-eat-mints, but I would say, "It's not bragging, if you can do it" and I have and have seen it done. Please do not think it is a happy walk in the park, it is stress and anguish all the way.
I think people that work in these fields should do proper research and conduct themselves in a proper Marine-Bioli fashion, charts graphs and so on. I personally have 4 file boxes of my research it Flight/plane stuff/data and 5-6 almost 6 in the Marine Bio stuff. I might missippsll a word here and there, but if I need a Secri I would have to pay for the service and thus the cost would be a business expence and cause much paper work, from the Grants/fundings.

I think it would be VERY unwise for a perosn to try a Split on a Carpet, without ample 10+yrs time in the hobby and a guiding hand in the first few. They can and will die fast, 3-4 days, if they are not cared and treated at the points of seperation. It is not an easy task and more of a complete Operation whitch requires dipping vatts and some 6-7-8 tricks to be completed. The steps are long and 3-4 weeks to see progress with such an operation. I might have spoken with a bit of Humorish non-shalont attitde, but it was on the note, of which I would guess that a person starting ot as about BTA's and Carpets would never go, being that if a person is asking these simple starter questions, it would be naturly assumed that they are not going to pay much attenshion to my Splitting coments. When did you,( the 5-10 yr vet of reefs) think to split one of these?, Never!, so come on, get with it, it was a humoris possibility that people can work toward, if not squemish and with the right knowledge.

Please stay away from the cuting table if you have not been involved for long and are still asking about what kind of lights should I use. Then again, do the same,( stay away from Propig) if you still are trying to figure out if and adjustment from 1.024 or 1.025 will kill off the entire tank.
:laugh long:  :laugh long:]

[Too long... I am not read reefgeekers rebutal... Too long!!! :taz: :very angry:

I only want to say I have seen 3 clownfish... same species sharing the same anemone. I believe they were skunk or saddleback. Really not sure...

But the anemone was small.

As for disection I have a book that refrenced that with some anemones to prompt "cloning" but did not suggest it. In fact made a refrence that we do not know how long anemones live there are reports of some that have been alive thousands of years.

P.S. I got two pink tips biiigggg mistake!!! go with a rose Bta. Marc has awesome flower anemones. But suggest they do not bond with clowns. May I also suggest the book clownfishes by wilkerson it refrenses bonding of clownes and anemones.]
