can you?? hob refug?

is it possible to build your own hob refugium?? i dont have room underneath my tank for a full sump/refug setup unless i buy a new stand. but if im going to do that id rather buy a whole new set up which i wont be doing for the time being. is it possible to do this??

let me preface my answer with: im a saltwater rookie.

I think that you COULD have a HOB refurium, but would it be big enough to be effective as a filtration mechanism?

If your goal was to just provide a safe haven for tender species, then I say go for it.

If your goal is to provide extra water volume and filtration via algae/chaeto/etc, then I say no, its gonna be too small to be worth it.

I know you said you cant go under the tank, but can you go above the tank ?

Yes you can, but you may want to look at the commercially available ones. I modified a CPR BakPak for a combo unit with a deep sand bed and use it on a 30G. AquaFuge makes. a hang-on refugium starting a $130. They generally are limited to about 60G main tanks. :)

I use one on my 55g and it works fine. I have to prune my Cheato about every two weeks and I have a lot of pods in there and I mean A LOT of them!!!
