Can you help id? - Covers pumps and live rock

[About a month ago I switched to South Down and ever since then I'm getting these small "growths" all over my rock. It seems to be harmless just unsightly. I can clean most of it off with airline tubing, but others are a little harder to dislodge.

Does anyone know what this is and how do I get rid of it?]

[Here is another picture with some in the backgound. It may be a little hard to make out but it gives you an idea of their size.]

[your sand is leaching phosphate and has "seeds" for that macroalgea... watch for more algea growth soon.....
run your skimmer very wet.........

[Well Nathan was right about the future algae and it looks a lot like cyno. :sosad: I checked the water with every test that I had and everything came back good, including phosphates. Then I took a water sample to the LFS and had them run everything that they had and it was good. I bumped up my cleaning crew to add some more nassarius (5), tonga dove (8), astrea (5), blue (8) and scarlet (2) hermits (on top of what I already have). So far there is not much of a change - the cyno and the original algae are still there. I didn't have this problem before I switched to the SD, could it be that the sand doesn't have enough “life” in it yet? There is some waste settling on the surface of the sand and I don’t know what to do about taking care of it. I don’t even remember seeing anything on my old sand bed (crushed coral), but of course it wasn’t as fine as the SD. And before the tang police start busting me; yes I have two yellows (3” and 6”).

I'm also having a problem with the cloudiness of the water. I rinsed the sand to get as much of the small particles out of the water, but it still gets stirred up fairly easily. It's not really dust, just "stuff" (larger particles) floating around. Any pointers?]

[You probably had a mini cycle of sorts as the sand bed is maturing. The different strains and types of bacteria and critters are all fighting and trying to get to an equlibrium. As long as the algea doesn't get out of hand rife it out and it should go away within a month or less.]

[That's what I was thinking too. I just wanted to stop it now if I could, rather than letting it get out of control! Thanks for the quick reply.]
