came up with a lighting idea

hey guys i came up with a lighting idea to do ! can some one let me know if this will work ?!!!

first off dont worry about heat issues , i have enough computor fans to run over the water that will keep temp around 78-80 !!

i wanted to do a DIY lighting system with 8 of these lights

■Brand : Plusrite
■Part No. : H07577336302
■UPC : 844366031199
■Wattage : 75 Watt
■Voltage : 130 Volt
■Base Type : Medium (E26)
■Beam Angle : 36 Degree
■Bulb Color : Clear
■Bulb Shape : PAR30
■Bulb Type : Halogen
■Color Temperature : 2850K
■Diameter : 3.7 in.
■Length (M.O.L.) : 3.6 in.
■Life Hours : 5,000
■Lumens (Initial) : 1,000
■Burn Position : Universal

and run 4 screw in 50/50 bulbs coralife makes thats half actenic and half daylight to get some blue spectrum into my tank as well for the coral !!

do you think this will be fine to grow any kind of coral ? i asked some people at LFS about it , and they said as long as i have fans blowing on the top of the water and over the sump , i should be fine ! and that it would be about running 2 1/2 , 250wat MH over my tank

tank is a 150 gallon 6ft , all lighting is going to be mounted on canopy in a "M" formation or double mountain formation !! let me know what yall think , thanks

the color temp on that bulb is not good for much

Are you talking about spiral power compact bulbs in a standard mogul light socket?

im talking about , what bulb would work , if you went and bought a bunch of screw in bulb plates from home depot , and wired them in ur canopy , ... like the type of bulbs that go in ur cealing fan !!! .... is there a bulb out there that can just screw in that will grow coral ? ... cuz i took a halogen light bulb , and pluged it in ,and put it over my tank to see what it looked like , and it looked pretty awesome , gave off the shimmer effect that MH doo , and wasnt that yellowish of a color !! ... and the more bulbs i did , the whiter the color of the light seemed to look , so i was woundering if i could just do like an "M" pattern in a canopy with 12 bulbs , and 4 of them would be 50/50 coralife bulb to get some blue spectrum in lighting as well !!! seemed like an awesome idea , and ive read online that some people grew there coral with them before !!! soo i just wanted to see if this method would work or not !!!

Its flourescent lighting, so you could grow softies and maybe some lps. They sell 10k spectrum spiral compact bulbs, I have them over my fuge and they work fine. I dont believe they make a pure actinic bulb in this stlye though, you would have to look on a lighting website.

Is 12 enough? I dont know. You also dont have any reflectors to speak of either, so the light just sort of randomly scatters. It sounds like for the money you are going to spend, you could find a used lighting system for the same amount. Actually, I am willing to bet you could find a used set of VHOs with reflectors and it work just as well as far as keeping the same type of corals.

well i have a used set of vho , they've been a pain in my @$$ , though since i bought them , i got them from a memeber on here , and they worked for like a week , then one of the bulb caps melted , then the ballast blew my fuse , i tried puttin new fuses in it , and it just blew them as soon as i plug in the lighting system !! so that means either ballast is shot , or theres a short that i myself am not gunna be able to find !!! .... soo now im out $100 with no lighting system , and have no money to afford another :/ i have crappy pc lighting , growing my mushrooms barley right now , !!! the vho's going out on me was a total killer !!! if anyone out there wants the vho set with a messed up ballast ill sell it for like $60 bucks i guess lol .... worked for a week , bulbs are all still good on it !!

If you're having trouble figuring out what went wrong with your VHO ballast, do you really want to try coming up with an entirely new light configuration using sockets and bulbs that weren't specifically designed for aquarium use? Besides the fact that those specific bulbs don't seem to have the right color temp, etc. to do the job, that's still a ton of power consumption, and I don't think you'd be saving much money (if any) over the cost of a good used lighting system specifically designed for this application. Finding someone knowledgeable to help you repair your ballast is probably even more cost effective. The worst thing you could do is blow money on a DIY setup that doesn't work (or worse catches on fire) and which probably wouldn't have any resale value.

I replied to another thread you started asking about VHOs and what you could grow with them. At the time (a couple days ago) you said you were on a VERY limited budget and were basically trying to decide on whether to spend the money on live rock or on upgrading your lights. At the time you said you werent planning on growing SPS, so I advised not to blow your limited budget on an unnecessary upgrade. So now you're wanting to grow SPS? You really need to walk a little before trying to run. Ive had a pretty stable LPS/BTA tank for a couple years now and am still daunted by the prospect and expense of delving into SPS. If you think the lighting can get expensive wait til you see how much it costs to get all the other stuff needed to upgrade flow and water quality. I still can't believe how much Vortechs (or even Koralias) cost for what they do. I have a relatively ghetto tank in terms of equipment, but my livestock is healthy and happy nonetheless because I've intentionally tried to stick with less demanding corals that work with what I have. This is an expensive hobby no matter what, so if you have especially limited resources you really need to spend your money wisely and be realistic about what you can do for now. Otherwise you could end up blowing a bunch of money anyway and giving up before you even have much to show for it.

+1 to Simon.

I can't tell you how much $$$ I've spent on trying to get my SPS tank stable and on changing lighting configurations. Hold off until you've gotten more info.

i didnt plann on going straight into sps , i just wanted a lighting system that will support it , so that later on when i do get the money saved up to start getting into sps , i dont have to change up lighting again !!! ill just save up , and do a MH system with either 3 175 watt MH or 2 250 watt MH

plan on doing 14k bulb to get that daylight blue look !!! .... thanks guys , sorry if some of you thought i was stupid for asking if this lighty system would work .... the whole point was for you guys to help me out cuz i thought it would be a cool idea and a very in exspensive way to go !!! turns out i was just wrong !! but i mean it nevr hurts to ask questions. thats how you learn , if your afraid to ask something , or worried about the crap that most people will tell you , your always gunna have a crap tank , and its always gunna be a problem !!!

PS: i have plenty of flow in the tank i believe !! 2 mag 9.5 return pumps comming from each end of tank , the back in middle has a 3200 gph wavemaker jet , and i have 4 wavemaker jets , 2 on each end of tank that push out 1600 gph each !! if thats not enough flow , then i might as well just invent a machince called the hurricane hahahah!!! cuz the flow in my tank is sweet !..... i also have shade spots for coral that wont like much lighting , and can put corals that dont like much flow in between rocks so the flow dosent bother them as bad !!

what would that have to do with anything ,.... i have a plexy glass cover over my bulbs , and the caps are water proof , something just shorted out !! .... i have a feeling the member that sold this too me knew it was messed up , so they went ahead and sold it cheap !!! ... oh well ... im gunna save up for a new lighting system now , so that i cant blame anyone buy myself

If it was an issue before you bought them.... then it wouldn't have worked at all, you know kinda just like it doesn't work now. Members usually give newbie's good deal's because we have all been new to the hobby and suffered from sticker shock when purchasing item's. You have gotten free LR and killer deals from members here as they try to help you have a successful tank so it is very uncool to turn around and try to blame these same folk's (that tried to help you out) for something you most likely caused....to top it off, you turn around and try to resell this same "messed up" item(your word's...not mine) while leaving out some really major key point's.[smilie=sadsmile.gif]

Cheers,

you dont know for sure if it was workin perfectly or not before , u never even seen the item !!! ... you have no right to tell me that i cant blame it on them , .... plus im not that much of a newbie !!! i just have a new tank , and im new to this forum !!! and im just new to coral kinda!!! ive had a 90 gallon bowfront set up with softies , and predator fish before for like 2yrs !!! .... people get screwed all the time by people man !!! .... i dont know for sure if it was workin perfect for them , seeing how ive only had the product for less than 2 weeks !! .... the 1st week it goes out on me !! im not gunna try asking for my money back , cuz i dont know for sure who's fault it is , sometimes things just break , but sometimes like i said , people like to get there money back before there money they spent on something goes completly to waste !!! .... ive been to a members house before , that was gunna try and sell me a regal tang with ick !!! ..... just because your a member , or staff member , dosent mean you cant screw people over lol ... me being a guest means nothing ! that just means i havent paid money to join yet !!! .....

also , what did i leave out , while trying to sell the item? ! ...i posted saying , its for sale , the bulbs all work perfectly , the fan works perfectly , just dont know if the ballast is shot for sure or not , or needs diffrent fuses !!! .... thats the truth !!! ... soo maybe until you know what your talking about , before you start dogging on me all the time , just because your a staff memeber !!! dont reply back to any post i have !!! .... all you ever do is dog on people ! or tell them that there wrong ! , when actually you know maybe 10% of what anyones problem really is !! ... and really if you think about it , everyone is a newbie to saltwater aquariums , .... theres not one person out there that knows 100% of anything about saltwater ! some people might know alot more than others , but if someone were 100% sure about everything , there wouldnt always be new inventions on how to make your tank better , or questions asked !!! theres always some one out there that tries to be better than someone els !! and that person would deffinatley be you !! .... your kinda like a cop !! think your above everyone in marine aquatics , just because you have the word STAFF on your icon!!! your the type of person that makes guest not want to join !

This is the problem I have right here. To think that someone may have screwed you is ok, everyone has probably gone through a deal where the product crapped out shortly after the purchase and they wonder if the seller knew about the malfunction or not, but it's not right to say it unless you have some sort of proof that you were in fact screwed.

can you read , i didnt blame them fully for it , " im not gunna try asking for my money back , cuz i dont know for sure who's fault it is , sometimes things just break"!!!!!

that quote clearly states , that idk who's fault it really was, its not that big of a deal ... people freak out just cuz a guest is stating that maybe a member screwed them over ! .... well you know it is possible for a member to be a jerk and sell something that they know is messed up ! i bet if i were a memeber this story would be totaly diffrent , you guys would just ignor the whole thread , and think hey maybe he did screw this other member over , ! its like the members gang up on guest hahahah... its crazy
