Calibrating refractometer

I just bought a C-scope refractometer. It says to use distilled water to calibrate it. Can I use the RO/DI water that I'm filling my tank with? Yes, I have a RO/DI machine.

Thanks,
David

That's a common question and one that doesn't really have a great answer. You should be able to use it, but that depends on how well your unit is pulling stuff out. Distilled by its nature should have most if not all the impurities removed. RO/DI should remove most of them, but the natural salts etc in the water may still slip through depending on your unit and your maintenance. Then you toss the manufacturers recommendation of using H20 to calibrate saltwater.... there is a lot of ongoing debate on that itself.

I use the pinpoint salinity probe fluid myself, others use a homemade calibration solution. The theory behind it is that you calibrate to a known salinity that is identical to what you are trying to maintain in the tank. Since this already has the salt in the equation, the though it is it will be more accurate.

I think you'll be much better using either method, compared to a swing arm, but you still may be off a tad using H20 only.

This is what Dave is talking about and what you want to use. http://www.marinedepot.com/American_Marine_Pinpoint_Salinity_Calibration_Fluid_Calibration_Solution_for_Testing_Equipment-Pinpoint_Monitors-AM1437-FITECL-vi.html

There is an article about calibrating refractometers in Reefkeeping Magazine, and the bottom line is don't use distilled or RO/DI water. A refractometer should be calibrated with a saline solution that is 35ppt -- otherwise, due to possible error, the scale will be off by one or two points due to using RO/DI water.

You can read all about it here: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-12/rhf/index.php

Thanks for all the info! Do you know of any LFS that carry any of the calibrating solutions? Hate to order online, shipping would be more than the product! I guess I'm just cheap that way

I ordered some online and with shipping it came to about 12.00

I only use a few drops of it every 6 months. It's been great ... I was suprised that my refractometer was not off that much.

You'll have to call around to some of your closest stores.

However, in that article or a subsequent follow up one, Randy explains how to make your own refractometer solution if you don't want to order it online.

I order some calibrating solution and it came in yesterday. WOW, there was 5 ppt difference. Salinity went from 1.026 to 1.023 after calibrating. Thanks for the heads up guys!!
