Calcium....

I did not know where to post this, diy, newb, or sps. I figured you sps people would know the most about this, that is why I decided here....

There is a lot of information out there, and there are a lot of opinions. Since I moved I am trying for a best case setup. I did a lot of searches, Kalkwasser, dowflake, calcium for saltwater tanks... you know the deal, you have all done it. How do you guys dose calcium? There are so many methods out there from CA reactors to yeast fermentation, to dowflake and epsom salt additions... I am looking for something that is effective that won't cause a huge purchase like a CO2 tank. So far (just in reading) the best methods seem to be...

Soaking kalk in vinegar (but then there would be a huge alk crash) I know nothing of chemistry, but doesn't vinegar negate Ca? I remember soaking chicken bones in vinegar as a child...

Dowflake and cooked baking soda (but I read somewhere dowflake isn't safe anymore)

using yeast fermentation gas and running it through the kalk mix but there is still the alk problems.... can cooked baking soda help this?

pickling lime..... same thing as kalk?

In Summation... What do you guys use? For how long? About how much time prepping is required a week, and how do you counter act the side effects, since there always seems to be at least one. Thank you all for your information!

It depends on the tank size. I have a 280g reef and a Calcium Reactor with a pH controller. That combination makes Calcium & Alkalinity a thing I don't have to worry about. I test Alk & Ca often, and never have to dose anything to bring either up to standard, because they are already in range. You can see the parms for my tank on this page:

Getting a used set up can cost you $300 or more. I just saw one for sale for $300 a few days ago.

The thing I dose is Magnesium, as it is depleted. The Calcium Reactor needs to be refilled with media about every 6 months, and the CO2 tank is refilled at a nearby liquor store.

most people mix ro/di with their kalkwasser...i add vinegar to mine in my opinion it helps buffer the ph of limewater coming out..vinegar actually helps get the most out of kalwasser to blend with ro water as it creates more co2 this is off the top off my head..i will have to look at my notes at home..

two part solution, calcium reactor or kalkwasser reactor are in my opinion the ways to go...i have done both two part and kalwasser...I just can not get the growth of someone using a dialed in calcium reactor. But that is me...I am a set it and forget person so i get lazy not dosing two part every day. that is my two cents i know couple members that get great results with kalwasser reactor ...i havent when i tried

also depends on how big your tank is and the calcium/alk load the corals you have..in which which direction you will go
