Calcium Reactor Media

How do you know when to change it??? It seems like the ph insinde the reactor is having a hard time dropping to 6.5... could this be old media?

How old is it? How much is left? What condition is it in? What does it look like near the bottom of the reactor? What kind is it? What is the pH level you are attaining?

6 Months old, over 1/2, looks fine... bottom is not bad... ph in reactor 6.7-7.1but tank ph has been too high 8.5-8.8... I just went up on the co2 and got the ph in the reactor to drop a bit 6.5... this should help some with the main tank ph... but I don't want my dKH to get too high... I just want to make sure the media is not the cause of the high ph... all corals look good ... I guess I should check the calibration of my probes too...

With my 280g, I had to refill the reactor every 5 months. I ran it at 3bps with a steady flow of effluent. pH was around 6.5

With my 400g, it's going to last much longer because I have far less SPS to provide for. I run it at 1bps, trickling the effluent. pH is 7.4

Be sure to calibrate both probes for accuracy. Are you dosing anything else to drive pH up that high in your reef? Usually by 8.5, some SPS stress and slime, so 8.8 is tough to believe.

I will calibrate both tonight... do pipoint probes go bad... I have had this one for about 4 years... the monitor on the calcium reactor is new... so i am sure it's fine...

Probes can go bad over time, and a year is about right although some may last longer. Using calibration solution, you can set it back to the correct reading. If it stays correct, the probe is still good, but if it varies again the probe is very likely going to need to be replaced.

The one in your reactor may be fine, but it doesn't hurt to double check its calibration.

Thanks... i turned off the co2 and the probe in the reactor no reads 8.3 I thing all is well... I will pick up a ne probe Saturday... cool.. thanks again!
