Buying LR online...

Hi,

Do you recommend buying liverock online ? I have fouond really good prices from reputable sources. I am just wondering about shipping it to here which takes about 3-4 days in which I assume, it'll ship dry without any water.

what do you guys think ?

There is a really good place down near houston (franklin) that is cheap and you could drive down to get it and be able to pick out your own pieces.

The best prices on rock are usually transhipped rock. You will have to cure the rock but that is no prob if you are starting a new tank.

Here is a link

Pre cured is rock that has is somewhat raw...it has the most life, but will need the most care to cure (clean, etc.) and need to cure out in a tub or a tank.

fully cured rock is just that, rock that has been in system until amonia, etc. has reached 0 and it is ready for tank. If you order on line, you will receive it wet...at least with wet newspaper on it. If it wasn't, you would have major die off and be in need of curing it again.

I just saw a really good thread about a LR vendor on RC..if I can find it, ill post. Dr. mac is good too, PA as well...but its' expensive. Maybe go base and live on top?

I am planning on going base on the bottom and live on top.

I am gonna do about 20-30 lbs base and same amount on live rock. This is on 55 gallon 48 x 13" tank.

what's a good going price for base rocks ?

Stan, Take a look at www.reeferrock.com for base rock. You're not going to get it for .19 cents per pound, but what you will get is base rock quarried from an old sea bed outside of Miami that is very light, but will give the most surface area of anything out there with all of the holes, tunnels, etc.... All this surface area will greatly assist in beneficial bacteria and provide a great pod population. We used it as base in our 215 and were very pleased. It will form coraline very quickly. The Vendor will e-mail a picture of what he has picked out for you for your approval. He will make changes after you view picture. We wanted larger pieces then what he showed us, and he accomodated our request. Also, the final order shipped to us was probably close to 20% - 25% more than what we ordered.

Good luck.

awesome...

I'll definitely look into that

I am just setting up the tank right now, so still looking around for available options..

Oh, depending on where you are located I was looking at maybe getting some base rock from there too. Maybe we could get together and do a GB or something.

I just about always order the bulk of my rock from Live Aquaria (their Lalo is just unbelievably awesome), than hit LFS for select / specific pieces I'm looking for to round things out.

and most of the time UnCured live rock means the Tuesday transhipped rock from Walt Smith on Fiji arrives, and they just turn around and send the box right to you from LA. While cured rock goes to a vendor/middleman and they sit it in their vats until sale. (I prefer the UnCured for new tanks as you get tons of freaky life).
