Bunch of skimmer questions.

Got a list of some skimmers I am considering for the 270. Would you please give me your preference and why you would pick this particular skimmer. Also, on the list is a couple of the new DC pumps. I know nothing about them. I have watched them on youtube, but other than that I know very little about them. So with all that said please review my list and if you have another suggestion at this price point please let me know. $400-600 new. I also have a thread in the Wanted section looking at possibly going used if I find a great skimmer that has been taken care of that would meet my needs.

Thanks for looking.

Bubble Magus BM-NAC9 395-530 Gallons $398

RLSS R8-I 8 Internal Skimmer with Speed Controlled DC5000 Pump $499

Reef Octopus Super Reef 5000 Internal Skimmer $609

Reef Octopus Super Reef 5000sss Internal Skimmer $544

Octopus Diablo 10" Skimmer with DC Controllable Pump $585

Octopus Diablo 12" Skimmer with DC Controllable Pump $635

I would get the RLSS. I don't have one myself, and have no real solid reason you should, other than I have been lusting after it lately. Saltysupply.com has them on-sale at the moment for $450. I am planning to order a DC-5000 soon to replace the Mag 9.5 I use on the closed loop of my system.

Ooohhhh I hadn't thought of that. A DC pump for a closed loop. You could do a lot of cool things with that.... Crap.... I gotta keep on track here.

I am a big fan of Reef Octo's and see that their new line is out as well with the same pump as the RLSS. I really don't know anything about the RLSS skimmers. Can you shoot me some info if you have it. Thanks for your opinion.

Keep them coming everyone. All of these are in my price range, so what would you do if you were me?

Only couple of concerns that I see on the RLSS skimmer for me Titus. I think the 8" skimmer body is a little small for this tank. Don't know that for a fact, just what I think. And, the "recommended" range is about 260g-530g. That seems like a really broad range. I don't know if that is Heavily stocked vs. lightly stocked and not really sure about the air intake volume being high enough. Feedback on these DC pump skimmers would be helpful, but they are so new it is hard to find any really informative feedback.

OK, I think I have narrowed down my choice to two skimmers. Really, to two pumps.

Either the
Reef Octopus Super Reef 5000 Internal Skimmer $609

or the
Octopus Diablo 10" Skimmer with DC Controllable Pump $585 pre-order price. Same pump that is on the RLSS skimmers.

Biggest difference to me is the DC pump has a 1yr warranty, and the Bubbleblaster 5000 has a 3yr warranty.

Any feedback?????????

DC pumps been out for awhile bubble king has used dc powered red dragon pumps

If pump is dc or ac doesn't make a difference. If a DC pump and AC pump push out the same gph they are equal.

All the dc pump is doing is adjusting the air water mixture just like manual adjusting volute on red dragon pumps

That makes sense. I have only heard about the red dragon pumps in a positive light. I haven't spend a ton of time looking for info on them, but what I heard has been good. I visited with the folks at Salty Supply and they really like the DC pumps on the RLSS skimmers, which happens to the be same pump on the Diablo and I think on the new PM skimmers that will be coming out soon. Also, I am reading that in the next year or two most skimmers will be running some type of DC pump.
Thanks Pampee for the feed back.

When myself Alex and saj01c talked to the rlss rep he really knew his stuff I was really impressed. He said the same DC pump will be powering an avast skimmer not sure if it is the current one or a new line.

In my opinion dc pump skimmers are not like led where you can hit and miss a spectrum. If the pump can mix the air and water, pull enough lph of air and make fine and dense bubbles its good to go but that is my opinion.

Agreed,
"The air draw readings of these new DC pinwheel skimmer pumps have reported to draw air numbers as high as 84 scfh/2400L/H at 53watts." This is on the DCS 250. For what its worth.......

I just send Jeremy at CoralVue an email asking about launch date and warranty. If he responds I will post it here as well.

I am building a 210g now, and got a call from Frank at Franks Tanks telling me my RO 5000SSS had arrived. I won't pick it up until Sat, and will hopefully have my 210g finished and everything from my 75g transferred by next weekend, so I'll let you know how I like it. I chose it based on $$$ and proven performance. I have 2 RO skimmers on my tanks and they are awesome.

Congrats and cool! I run a RO on my 165g, but not that particular skimmer. I like the footprint of the SSS skimmers. They sure save a lot of space. Please review your purchase when you can. It helps all of us.

Response from Jeremy at CoralVue.
I asked him about the warranty being different than the bubble blaster, and when are these skimmers going to arrive. Here is his reply. Nice to get back to me in less than 24hrs on a non-emergency question.

""They just arrived and are shipping out to our distributors this week. The DC comes with a two year warranty for the pump and one year on the rotor.""
